Guns have no political value in democracies?

True, they have no political value in a democracy, other than keeping the democracy from becoming a dictatorship.

I got the same kind of treatment over at @forumz

I was gonna join that chat, but after reading a few posts I decided there were WAY WAY WAY TOO MANY dumb people to argue with.

I think maybe I'll point out to them that if you read the Second Ammendment literally it states that the Militia should be regulated, but it mentions nothing about regulating their ownership of weapons.

Theodore White, who wrote "The Making of the President" covered that episode in Athens, Tennessee. It's discussed in his autobiography, "In search of history" at page 250. I don't know if he reproduced any of his coverage in any of his books. He says in the book that his article was published in Harpers, so I guess you could get that printed out at about any large library from microfilm.

Who cares? This country was founded as a Constitutional REPUBLIC!!!!

Anybody here ever said the Pledge of Allegiance?
The founding fathers hated democracies.

Right here we've got some fairly open-minded people with a slight libertarian slant. And while they claim to support the 2nd Amendment, they say:

1. The world would be better if there were no guns.

2. Only people living off their firearms (for hunting) should have them- shotguns & rifles... handguns are only for killing not defense.

Please go set them straight, there's an honest possibility for conversion with these folks since they're highly freedom orientated.

Dangus, the definition of "regulated" at that time was "trained ", not "governed by law". As in a clock is "regulated" to keep good time, It is adjusted, not ordered.

JimR,

Hitler was elected, yes, but it must always be kept in mind that all the major cities were filled with armed Nazi party members who were courteous to pro-nazi folks, and outright nasty and murderous to Jews and anti-nazi folks. While Hitler might have been elected anyway, they certainly did a lot to tamper with that election and to keep their opponents from voting.

Dangus:

My point was to back up JOTMG's post, which was:

quote:
True, they have no political value in a democracy, other than keeping the democracy from becoming a dictatorship.[/quote]

by noting that one of the most horrible dictatorships of modern times (I would argue Stalin's was worse, but that's another thread) began as a democracy.

Our Founding Fathers explicitly rejected democracy as a form of government, instead choosing a constitutional republic with democratically elected representatives. Unfortunately, most changes to that system have been to make the process more democratic, which is not / has not been necessarily good.

Yeah, basically Stalin managed what Hitler didn't. He killed millions and got away with it.
