I live in a "low threat" environment but i have multiple guns "strategically placed around the house. no kids here so all are locked and loaded.
besides my carry, mossberg 500 with 18.5 barrell, 20 inch winchester 94 (30-30) kahr pm9 with 2 extra clips, ruger vaquero, glock 22/40.
theres even a dart gun in the barn.
remainder of guns in the safe.
does anyone else place guns around the house?
tom

I also live in a pretty "low threat" area but I don't keep guns stashed around the house.

Typically I don't wear a gun at home, though that's the easiest way to ensure one is always close at hand. I do keep a "desk gun" handy when working from home and I have a "nightstand" gun for the dark hours.

If you live in a rural area with neighbors dozens of yards away (or more) I can understand strategically located guns in the house.

Do you take the time to round up all your hidden guns and lock them in the safe when you leave the house empty? Do you do that even if it's going to be a 20 minute (or so) trip to the store? Consider what could happen if you just went to the neighbor's house for a 5 minute visit and stayed for 30 minutes gabbing. Coming home to face an intruder with your own guns is not my idea of fun.

Sadly, most criminal types will find your hidden guns unless you're lucky or extremely clever.

Mine are locked up

I keep mine locked up. Even with kids, I worried more about my guns getting into the wrong hands. Of course there are quick access safes if you feel you need one, or two, or six;)

You're right, Bill. I knew a guy that came home for a minute, and he was killed in a gun fight in his house by an intruder who had found one of his guns....shot in the forehead. They know where to look, it seems, no matter how hidden we think the guns are.

With a 3yr old, all in a safe except my daily carry, which would be put into this every night - digital keypad for quick, easy access incase someone wants to come play with me in the middle of the night, and he's a guy, and smells weird, and doesn't want me for me, but wants me for my money or my bestbuy paradise!

Hmmmm, so having guns all around the house is not so smart.
so, besides your carry weapon and maybe a nightstand gun, is there any other steps to take.
i started keeping my winchester accessible for the occasional coyote and mountain lion that harassed my livestock.
would hate to get shot with my own gun!
whats a guy to do?

If I hid the guns, I would make sure that the chamber is empty and the magazine is gone or empty...then you would have to hide the magazines or bullets and hope they didn't find them. The thing is, if you make it too complicated for the burglar, you may forget where something is, yourself. I already forgot where I hid my .32 revolver, not that I need it. It is not one that I would depend on for HD. It is unloaded, though. I DO remember that. Thank God. :barf::D

I have the same problem you do, tplumeri, and I wish I could afford a safe right now, but, as it is, I have all these guns, and have to hide them....duh.

I keep my rifles, and shotguns locked up in my attic. I keep a .40 & .45 in my closet which is on my side of the bed. Although the clips are full I don't have a round chambered in either of them. I have a nine year old daughter so having guns placed here and there around the house is out.

I live out in the boonies and have yard dogs. A gun in a safe is useless, even if you can get into it in seconds. Mine are loaded and scattered thru the house. I have a 15 year old daughter that knows where and how to use them too but then she has her own guns. I pity the fool that tries to take advantage of her.

Here, over there, and maybe under that place.
My first concern is staying alive, my second concern is what some burgler might do, and third down the line is what folks on line think about how I organize my home. :D

my home

loaded here and there and all my girls know where and how...never come thru the door unarmed...someone always home and then there are the dogs...not willing to chance it ...if some one comes in then they will be at the disadvantage :D

My Roomates and I

got creative in hiding weapons around the hosue in our crappy neighborhood. For example, the top drawer in the kitchen has been 'dummied' to allow for the .380 auto to hide underneath the silverware. Mossberg 870 mounted inside entertainment center, covered with matching wood so it blends in. I have two 'false wall' safes in my room. Just held in place by duct tape on the backside. Easily stores all kinds of goodies. Also, got ahold of the couches with the cubby holes in the armrests, so I put my duty piece there while I am watching TV. This is the product of 4 guys being bored and trying to put their guns where they are out of sight, yet accessible. In our living arrangement, a single safe somewhere would not work, but this has worked so far. When the rowdy neighbors decide it's party time (every other day it seems), we keep pieces very near to us. I still want to buy a big safe for my room.

Damn, I just put all but my carry and night stand guns in the safe!
Now I'm not so sure I didn't have it right the first time!
I was concerned about being away from the house with all these guns, but i have two "inside the fence" dogs and one barn dog. none of them like strangers.
And the guns weren't just laid about haphazardley. they are all "stealth" so to speak.
I'm actually quite proud of some of my home concealments. but tplumeri is my real name (tom) so i won't detail the hidey holes online! :)
I'm going to the basement to get my guns out of the safe.
be safe out there
tom

I keep loaded firearms in two places; my office and my bedroom. Rest are unloaded with the ammunition far away from the firearm. I have been burglerized in the past, which is why I keep at least one firearm loaded at all times. I have no idea if I'd actually use the firearm. Guess it will be up to the next druggie to find out. :)

Have you ever hid something really well and then forgot where it is? I have. That's why loaded firearms are not hidden.

Hear puppy puppy puppy

"Oh he's so cute" no he's a staff pit and knows it. that's the bad part. I warn them but I dont have the smartest of friends sooo 4 bitten in last 2 months TOLD YA!! med box top drawer left side kitchen! oops sorry ya dumb ass.:D

but he's the best guard dog and intruder alert in town.

hey doesnt micke vick live near hear? jk but....:D

I used stash a couple of handguns, most notibly a 9mm in my entertainment center next to the stereo speaker. It's right next to my main entry door, so I figure it would be handy for answering an unexpected door knock, as well as being able to grab it should I be the one entering to find Mr. BG with an arm load of stuff.

About six months ago, I started overthinking it and put them all in the lock storage. I starting thinking that, no matter how well you hide it, a BG tearing your house apart looking for valuables is VERY LIKELY to find it. If you come home when he's got it, you could die from your own gun. Figure I'll leave them all locked up when I'm not home, and bring my HD pistol out when I get there. It's a PITA to keep locking them up every time I leave, but for me it's a necessary discipline.

If not in my pocket, I keep my daily carry gun within about 5 feet of me at all times, away or at home.

A loaded, unchambered, short shotgun by the nightstand is a good option too. Living in an apartment, I keep my other guns locked in a safe, just because I don't want anyone walking off with them...especially the 'questionable' maintenance crews when they come once every season to check the water heater and forced air heater. I don't need them stealing it or 'borrowing' it for a hit, then bringing it back & leaving it here.

I do a walkabout through my apartment whenever I come in, checking in closets, behind the shower curtain, and in the walk-in pantry. I also never enter without checking blind corners as I come through the door. If I don't check the closets & stuff when I come in, I do before I go to bed. I don't really consider these processes to be paranoia. I just have heard some horror stories about apartment dwellers...where other people who are strangers have access to their apartment. In an apartment, you don't just have a land-lord, you have all of the little worker bee maintenance people too who have access. But, even in a house, it is easy for someone to get in without causing visual signs of a break and enter.

Very smart....not paranoid, but you are aware of today's increasing dangers. Keep it up. Always keep the guard up. :)
