Guns and loads of various agencies?

Does anyone know how to find out which agencies issue which guns? I'm just curious and have not been able to find a comprehensive resource.

I don't know of any publication or website that has that kind of info. You can call the individual agencies and speak to the training officer or head rangemaster to get the info. Why do you want the info?

I suppose I'm just curious about the whole process. As we discuss guns and loads, it would be interesting to know what choices have been made by pros, and more importantly, why...

i would hardly go by what they use i know of quite a few agencys here in the south that still have to use the 9 cause they are afraid the bigge bores will hurt the perps to much
Atlanta sucks !!
But a few of the others that do not worry about political fallout use the .40 glocks with the gold dots
and the 1911 with 230 gr.hydroshocks when they are allowed to carry what they want on duty

My brother-in-law is a Ky.state trooper and they carry a S+W 1006 10MM loaded with 180 grain Fed. Hydro-shocks. I think they are the only state agency to carry this pistol and load. Suffice to say this has done the job.

wolf 1415,

There is no point in trying to draw any conclusions from the guns that different agencies select. Let me give you an example of why:
In the last two years, let's say agency A and B both selected .40 S&W pistols for duty issue. A and B both formed committees, and had exhaustive "trials" to determine which gun to choose. A and B both tested basically the same pool of guns. BUT, in the end, A and B chose different guns. Why? Personal bias of the "committee"(er, old boy network) members, for one, is a HUGE reason. So and so may love Glocks, etc. Money is a HUGE reason. For example my agency will never issue Sigs, too damn expensive, etc. There are a myriad of reasons.
One agency I am familiar with chose one particular gun, then the same manufacturer came out with a polymer model and the firearms staff stated they would have chosen the polymer model had it been available when the test was done. And people out in the world buy the handgun this "elite" agency issues thinking it's the best when that agency has already determined something is better. Confusing? YES
In my opinion the best handgun is the one with the largest caliber, that can be shot at speed more accurately than any other, which dominates all "combat" pistol competition, which has been proven over 80 years to be a superior design. In other words, if I was on the committee, we'd be using a dehorned 1911 .45acp with big fixed sights and a 4# trigger as a duty gun. There's that personal bias I mentioned above.

As always, $.02,
Dave

Actually Don, I think the KY. State police use the 1086(or 1096??)instead of the 1006. There are a few 1006's being used because the 1086 is getting hard to find, but my friend who is a trooper in KY was issued a 1086. BTW this gun and load really did the job on my friend...he was shot with his own duty weapon...messed him up bad! He's lucky to still be alive!!!

I agree with Dave. Cost is a big factor when agencies pick guns and ammo. For example, if brand X is $1 a box cheaper than brand Y, guess which ammo gets issued. Also who is picking the weapon to be issued, if the rangemasters are doing it and they hate Sigs, Sig will not be issued.

Here in central South Carolina it's a mixed bag. My county issues the S&W Sigma (.40 I think), Columbia City PD issues DAO Sig 220s with a generic 230 JHP, the next county over issues Sig 226s or 225s (officer pref) and the state guys all seem to carry Glock .40s.

There are still departments that let the officer carry what he/she wants, pending review. (but their getting fewer and fewer)
