Gunman shoots four officers in 7- hour standoff
08-14-2000
NEW YORK - A Brooklyn gunman opened fire Saturday starting a seven-hour standoff that wounded four officers and ended in his death.

Officer Gregory John, 32, was shot in the shoulder, Officer James McGrath, 33, was grazed by a bullet to the face, and Officer Jose Ocasio, 43, was shot in the leg. All three officers are in good condition. Officer Jose Guerra, 34, suffered gunshot wounds to the face and leg and is in serious condition. Three others suffered minor injuries.

The parents of the gunman notified police that Arthur Alalouf, 47, had purchased weapons and intended to shoot officers. When the officers arrived at Alalouf's home, around 1:45 in the afternoon, he opened fire from the second floor window hitting, first, Officer Gregory John, 32, of the Emergency Services Unit in the shoulder and firing eight more bullets into his bulletproof vest. Hundreds of officers arrived, evacuated neighborhood houses and attempted to contact the gunman through a camera-equipped robot. Alalouf was able to sneak into a neighbor's house were police later found him. He opened fire once more and police responded with deadly force to end the incident.

Alalouf had been a New York correction officer from 1982 to 1984.
