Time to clear up a few misconceptions.
The "Contra Costa Sheriff's Posse" that Kim Fang belonged to was a later incarnation under that name. The early horseback/parade group (earlier than that, a horseback search and rescue team) had been disbanded in the late 60s or early 70s when one guy broke his neck during a parade.
"Posse2" which Fang was in with is purely a social/political club with no law enforcement functions or official connections. People join purely to gain access to local politics, primarily the Sheriff. There are over 300 members, and they hold the majority of the CCW permits in this county.
Fang "paid a high price" for his self defense rights long before that shootout. $700 in campaign contributions to the current Sheriff (Rupf) to ensure his CCW renewals, several $thousand to Sheriff Rainey who issued to him back in '89 I think, or close.
I've been able to track $21,000 in campaign contributions from the tiny pool of permitholders (236 current) to Sheriff Rupf. That doesn't include corporate donations that could be linked to the CCW of a company president or VP. And this county has a population over 900,000.
If it's not clear yet: unless you're a government employee or a personal friend or political supporter of the Sheriff, you ain't getting a permit around here. I've fought one lawsuit on the subject already, another is brewing - see my site below for details.
I don't begrudge Kim Fang his right to self defense...but as a resident of the same county living in a lower-income mostly-black town (Richmond) that has been redlined by the Sheriff from all CCW access, I'm fighting for the SAME RIGHT FANG HAD.
