Gun trading in Illinois

Is there any special processes for trading firearms for other items like a mower in Illinois? Or would the transaction be just like a normal private party sale?
 
From what I remember of IL law, you must see the recieving party's FOID card, write the number off of it down, and keep record of the transaction for 10 years. Also, I am pretty sure that the state-mandated waiting period (1 day for long guns and 3 days for handguns) also applies to private party sales. I could be mistaken, however, as I'm working purely from memory here (moved away from IL in 2002).

You need to retain the records forever, even though the law says ten (10) years. Without them, you cannot prove it was over ten (10) years.
 
isn't the waiting period a federal thing - i though was il, but someone told me otherwise.

so really, in a private sale or trade, i'm going to have someone drive up or in to my location, exchange money, confirm foid card, and then tell them to come back in a few days.

not sure if that is followed. have not done a sale, but may in future.
 
Here in Missouri, the waiting period for a handgun is about as long as it takes you to do your paperwork and for the clerk to make a phone call.

Really makes for a bad thing when you are an impulse purchaser. :)
 
Oh, and i see the above about cook county - that includes chicago - that has to be through FFL dealer.

I can just have my dad buy something in mi for me and transfer later.

Be very careful about this bittorrent. Be sure: (1) that you're not entering into a straw purchase; (2) that you understand how transfers across state lines work; and (3) how transfers have to go in your local jurisdiction.

I know, i will read up on all the laws when i do go to do something like transfer across state lines - that complicates a lot.

Thats why I purchased my first gun through a normal dealer in il.

Now that I have my certification from my "gun class" ,which was a requirement before i could register my gun in city of chicago, I can go down to central police station and get my permit - finally. A lot of steps just to legally own one in your home.
