Gun thieves have ties to gang, officials say

A pack of gun thieves who crashed a Suburban into a gun store, then got tangled in a hit-and-run hours later likely has gang ties, authorities said Friday.
The suspects remained at large almost two days after smashing through Dave's Guns on South Parker Road, and making off with about 40 handguns and a massive .50-caliber rifle.
In an investigation that includes the Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms and the Metro Gang Unit, authorities continue their search for two young men likely in possession of about half the stolen handguns and the rifle.
"We believe that some of the parties involved have gang affiliations," said Arapahoe County Undersheriff Grayson Robinson.
However, it's too soon to say if the thieves are actually gang members, he cautioned.
The rifle is the same model, a .50-caliber L.A.R. Grizzly, that Albert Petrosky used in a 1995 rampage at an Albertson's grocery that left three people dead, including Jefferson County Sheriff's Sgt. Timothy Mossbrucker.
"This rifle is effective to 2000 yards," said Dave Anver, owner of the burglarized store.
Anver was selling the high-powered $2,500 rifle on consignment.
By far the most deadly of the stolen weapons, he called it "the most serious military-grade rifle they have."
The burglary occurred Thursday morning. Investigators got a break in the case later in the afternoon when a car careering recklessly along East 17th Avenue triggered a wreck.
The occupants tried to flee. But a 16-year-old girl was arrested, and a witness chased down a young man who discarded a duffle bag of 19 handguns along the way. Police believe its about half the cache stolen.
Investigators have been interviewing the 16-year-old girl. Anver said police told him the thieves covered the discarded duffle bag with a jacket that contained identifications.
