Gun Storage

Hey guys, this may be a silly question to many of you, but i am curious and this is the best place to get quick, knowledgeable answers on anything firearm related, so here goes.

For Firearms that you dont plan on using for long periods of time (or havent in quite some time) is it still necessary/recommended to oil them every so often, just to keep in tip-top shape??

I hope my credibility doesn't take to much of a hit with this one:eek:

Under "normal" conditions a quick wipe down with a silicone rag or simialiar(mostly for dust) with a visual inspection shud be fine

I have a number of guns that I don't shoot very often. About every 4 months or so, I'll run a patch with either Breakfree CLP or Eezox (CLP) through the barrel and cylinders (of a revolver). Lube what needs to be lubed, Eezox everything else I can get to, and wipe down with Eezox on the outside. Eezox is an excellent rust preventive.

Doing this every quarter is probably overkill. In years past, when I wasn't shooting as much as I am now, I've oiled only once a year and have never had a problem with rust. I live in the Ohio Valley so summers are humid but not like it is in some parts of the U.S.

There are other methods for even longer storage.

+1 on what they said ....

but I will also tell you it depends on where your guns are stored ( not in a safe, etc is an issue, but doesn't matter for this discussion ). If your safe is in a colder area ( like a basement, or on an uninsulated wall that goes to outside of house, and its humid ...then you might get some condensation on your guns ). Air holds water as humidity / as the air cools water will condense on the coldest things ....like a gun, or a cast iron table on a table saw, etc .. If your safe is inside house / heated / temp is pretty constant ...wiping down once a quarter or so is probably enough. If you see any condensation / you might have to do it weekly - or deal with the condensation issue ( leave a small wattage light bulb on in safe, install a glo - rod, etc ) ......

Rig Oil, Birchwood Casey Sheath ....and others are good rust inhibitors too ...

RIG is what I use on long term storage and exterior surfave. You can purchase a "Rig Rag"(RIG on sheepsking) for $10 and a tub of RIG for $6.

The two will last...
IDK how long. THe rag alone has not run out yet. I just bought the tub b/c it is no longer made and I thought it might be sold out before i needed it.

Safe is inside, and its usually never below 48-50 degrees usually around 75-80 where i am at. summers will be at/near/over 95.

I am thinking once every six months will suffice. I have some rags but will get more.

thanks all

+1 on the Eezox - great stuf for storage, I live in hot and humid central florida and all my reloading dies are in the garage - all I have to do is when I am done with them just to sprey them with eezox and put them back on shelf - in more then 5-6 years I am using eezox I have no rust on them, and it takes just a few week to rust a nail in my garage

I once left my guns in storage for about a year and a half without touching them. I simply applied a healthy layer of CLP and sealed them in plastic bags with as much of the air pushed out as possible. As long as the oil didn't dry out, I figured it was OK. Had no issues with it.
