gun storage

guys,

I'm new around here but would like some advice.

i have an 870 that i bought for home defence and right now i keep it under my bed with four rounds in the tube, chamber empty and with the hammer down.

this was reccomended to me by a friend, because all you need to do is rack it, but its not ready to go off just laying there.

does anyone have any other suggestions on a good way to keep a gun ready but not dangerous for home security?

thanks

This works good for handguns http://www.gunvault.com/products/

I have seen shotgun closet mounts for shotguns but I haven't seen anything that keeps it "secure" that is unusable by theives or children should it be discovered.

Maybe I should invent some type of wall mounted long gun holder that has a key pad quick release but prevents the gun from being removed or fired until unlocked.

HMMM...

hooks

do you mean up on the top of the closet? just 2 hooks that i can pick up at home depot?

thats so simple its genious.

i have a pistol grip, think the hooks will still work?

thanks!

How do you keep your home defense shotgun?

You have to keep a balance between safety and functionality. On the far end you have it in a safe and / or trigger lock unloaded, on safe. The other end of the storage spectrum is fully loaded, one shot shell in the chamber, hammer cocked, safety on fire.

Most find a set up between those two.
...rounds in the tube, chamber empty and with the hammer down.
Mine are set up the same as yours.

I find your way of storing to be the best as well...

One upside to that (IMO) is if someone is in your house and they happen to hear you rack the pump on your 12 guage, you may have convinced them to leave.:D As long as you don't have children (or adults that act like children) in your house it should be fine.

currently i have my brothers 12g remmy fully rifled barrel unloaded in the hard case i keep a 5 box of win sabot deerslugs, as most of you know on the newer remmy's they come with a key to lock the safety. i keep the safety locked and key in the case but if some one breaks in, ill just grab my dads 38 i keep loaded under my pilow:D

Nothing scarier than hearing a pump shotgun rack one in, in the dark.

I might have to try the hook idea.

Thanks

Thanks everyone for all the replies.

you all have been very helpful.

i bought some hooks today at walmart and im going to mount them under my bed.

I am sorry and will probably get a flaming,, but you guys are paranoid. Have you ever been broken into by armed intruders? Do you have a clue as to what happens when you Rambo some bad guy in your home? I love to hear of the people that have 30 rounds at the "ready" and the fact that some BG is gonna mess their pants when you "rack the slide". You watch too much TV or have a Rambo complex.
Do you really think that you are going to be in a "running" gun battle with someone?? not likely. You shoot someone, even IN YOUR HOME and you will be on trial for Manslaughter at least. And then that is when the family of the BG testify on how he was drunk or some other reason and was in your house because of it or he was lost or confused because of his medications. Have fun with you Lawyers defense billing. If I were, in fact, in fear of my life withan armed assailant in my home, the last thing I want to do is scare him with the,, damn,, the slide racking nonesense. I want the last thing he heard was BOOM.
Everybody in these forums talks the talk, but, if you were really smart, tell your thoughts and proposed plans to a lawyer and get HIS opinion of what you are going to be going through. We all like to think we are tough and can defend our homes and family.. the bottom line is, you are better off letting him take what he wants and leaving, then call the police and let them handle it. I bet there is very few of you that have a clue as to how to confront a BG in the safestet manner to you and your family. I have read so much Macho BS along these lines and it is simply BS and Puffery to me. I am 62 years old and I finally got broken into,, the jerks were at least smart enough to be sure I wasn't home, I am sure they rang the door bell to make sure too. These guys ain't stupid, just dumb and gutsy. Personally, I don't care if I get banned or flamed,, some people just don't have a real clue, they just think they do. I just get tired of reading the Macho BS. Oh by the way,, I was a LEO in a past life

rambo,

you're right, and your wrong.

we are all a little bit paraniod, very true.

i dont think that there will be a running gun battle in the home, or that i will ever need to use my gun, but i would rather have it and not need it than need it and not have it.

i was simply asking about a good way to store a gun incase the situation ever arose. and of course, it is smarter to let them just take your stuff and sort it out later. however, with a girlfriend at home all the time, its not a nice feeling knowing that you have no control in a situation if somone does come in and want more than your tv.

Now, i do not know where you live, but luckly for me i live in the great state of Louisiana, where it is legal to kill anyone in your home if they "intend to commit a felony or harm." and i have spoken to police officers extensivly about this subject and they say that if somone is in your home and they indend to do harm, and you kill them, you are in the clear.

E.g, i go to lsu, 3 weeks ago someone broke into a students apartment, and the student shot him. the man is in the hospital, and will be charged with attempted robbery, but the shooter will not be charged.

oh, and you and i are in complete agrement on the fact that racking the slide to scare someone is a stupid tactic, its very hollywood and dangerous ( it gives away the element of suprise.) the police suggest to call them, and wait, if the person knows you are there, infrom them that you have called the police, and that you have a gun. that is the safes thing to do.

I probably should apologize.. I was just in one of those moods and get so tired of the Rambo types that know nothing of which they speak. I totally agree if someone want more than your TV,, well there is a point that deadly force is the only option. I just tire of hearing all the ways someone is going to proceed without a clue as to some of the laws. Unfortunatly for me, I am in New York, from Arizona,,, soon to go back to Arizona, God willing. NY has some real strange laws as does most of the NE. The Police advised you correctly, even IF you have the right to shhot someone,, do you want to live with it?? As they said, call them,, let the BG know you are home and you are armed. That in itself should get rid of them, and they will most likely leave your TV too. The last thing these guys want is to confront anybody. They want to do their dirty work and get out, they aren't looking for any trouble, much less from an armed homeowner. They are cowards to start with, and cowards to end with.
If you have read some of the threads in here you would know why I get so sick of the Rambo mentality. I used to be in another life a LEO.
So many people just want to sound tough, be armed to the teeth and expound on what they are gonna do if broken into. Most of the crap would make a great TV show. In reality, most of these guys would be in jail longer than the BG was in the hospital. And if you killed him,, you better have a good Lawyer and hope you can PROVE your life was threatened and you had no choice. Most of the crap I have read wouldn't pass the test and their a$$e$ would be in jail. So many of these "clown" want extended magazines, sidesaddle mags, 30 rounds in their pocket and on and on. They talk like someone with a paper a$$hole. It probably in reality only takes you making a noise, or yelling to the BG to get him to run, they don't usually want a confritation and at the WORST, and if the worst possible thing happened, a single shot would end it.
As far as your question on a hide out gun,,, as long as your GF is familiar with guns, she KNOWS it is loaded and you don't have any young kids at home or visiting, under your bed is as good as most places. In a closet out of sight and out of reach of kids is probably better. You have to make the final call on this based on your own situation. Final thought, I agree with you, I would rather have a gun and not need it, than need it and not have it.

LSU and Ruger (mostly Ruger)...

I'm glad you both agree that racking the slide is a bad idea. However, the way you (LSU) currently store your gun would require you to rack the slide.
Ruger, you also make this claim and say that it would be a stupid idea because it would alert the intruder. "I want the last thing he heard was BOOM". Besides that not being anywhere close to a correct sentence, you later go on to say "Let the bad guy know you are home and armed. That in itself should get rid of them". So would you shoot him then because you want the last noise the intruder hears to be "BOOM". What better way to let an intruder know you are both home and armed than by racking your pump shotgun and telling them to get out. You then call criminals cowards. Any coward I know would find the exit of my house quickly upon hearing the sound of my 870. It doesn't sound like a stupid "tactic" to me. Next time, instead of contradicting yourself 3-4 times in your post and putting your foot in your mouth, use a little common sense. By the way, using the dollar sign in your profanity does not make it any less offensive or more acceptable. Please read the forum rules again if you didn't understande them the first time around.

racking the slide,

i know i would have to rack the slide, however, racking the slide can be done gently, under the covers and less loud (becuase its not really quiet) than fully racking the slide to scare somoene off.

i refuse to leave my gun with one in the chamber, ready to go.

Ruger,
I dunno' where you live or where you're coming from my friend, but to think we can't take care of ourselves in a home invasion scenario is your speculation. To allow yourself to get pistol whipped while your wife and daughter are being raped to death by four guys on your bed is going to be your problem when it happens - actually it won't be your problem for long as they're gonna' pop you in the left eye before leaving anyways. Don't believe that? Then you should really turn on the TV and watch the news sometime. Happens often enough in the big city. Has it ever happened to me? Not yet, but I'm a heck of a lot more prepared than just sitting on my thumbs waiting to possibly die. Guess I'd rather die trying than to die while tied to a chair. Guarantee the scenario of non-combatant ain't ever gonna' happen over over here in a situation like that - Guaranteed.

I can pull up numerous real surveillance videos and verifiable stories right here on the Internet where during fire fights if the bystander wasn't armed they would have been dead. I can also pull up a load of stories where meek individuals died, just because that's the way BG's often are these days.

Paranoid? - as said earlier, a little, and rightfully so. I'd rather term it "non-stupid" myself.

Do yourself a favor and actually speak to a few officer's of the law about that idea of yours and ask whether they are prepared for a home invasion. I have about mine, and all I ever get is big thumbs-up for being prepared.

Quiet???

I'm sure it can be done quieter, but to take your pump down and then all the way back up again to chamber a round is gonna make some noise. I dont see why anyone would waist time sneaking around but that's you. I can respect how you do things. All I'm saying is if I was snooping around somewhere where I wasn't supposed to be and I heard the unmistakable sound of a pump shotgun, I would quickly be on my way!:D
