Gun Stock Blanks

Hey all, my wife and I bought a house almost three years ago now and the shop, barn, and shed were full of mostly crap. I found these blanks in the shop and I have no idea what to ask for them or what type of wood they are. There's one that actually says black walnut but the others are unknown. A couple of them are dated back to 1997 and have prices of over $100 written on them. I would really appreciate it if you guys could help me out, I really have no use for them as I'm a metal fabricator and am clueless when it comes to wood.

Any info is greatly appreciated. I can try to get better pictures tomorrow if need be.

If I had to guess on wood, I'd say from top to bottom
Maple (maybe Flame or Burl)
Purple Heart?
Cedar/Hickory?
Spalted Maple
More Purple Heart?

Of the two on the right, I'm thinking some type of oak and the one on the far right is the walnut?

I'm no expert though and these are all complete guesses.

Blanks of good exotic nature can be worth several hundred dollars. I don't see anything that would seem extraordinary high, such as in the thousand or higher price range, but some of the good blanks might be worth a couple hundred each if I were to hazard a complete and total guess.

I would take it to a woodworker and ask him to check the quality and stability of the wood and maybe commission a few stocks if I were you and had the resources to do so. Nothing like a custom wood stock to enhance a fine rifle.

The one at the top looks like figured maple. The other four lighter ones are various types of figured walnut, I think.

I don't think the two purplish ones are purpleheart, which is more purple than grey when it's unfinished. My best guess is that they're English walnut.

(Actually, the other five look blue and black to me... :p :D)

As to value, it would depend somewhat on the grain direction and presence of any defects, but I'd guess in the $100-150 range, maybe up to $200 depending on exact species and wood quality. Speaking as a woodworker, that's about what I'd be willing to pay, at any rate. (A lot of specialty wood is sold at insanely inflated prices.)

Those two definitely look like purple to me, but it could be a case of our monitors being different and you, being probably a more regular woodworker than me, knowing what you're looking at.

At least I got the Maple pretty close :D

Sounds like I need to go talk to a woodworker, as mentioned above. Thank you guys for the info/advice, really appreciate it.

Dakota, if you look at the edges rather than the finished surfaces, they're grey rather than purplish. The finished tops do look purplish -- English walnut can look like that in some lights.

Looks like #1, 3 and 4 (top down) will make really pretty stocks. It's hard to tell about the rest. Type of wood? I can't tell you. Nice find, though.
