I'm pretty fed up with the craptacular quality of the gun shows in Illinois (where I live). I've heard that the Indiana 1500 that happens several times a year in Indianapolis is really nice. Only about 2 hours drive for me, too..
So I've got a few questions about the legalities of gun show purchases across state lines. All the following pertain to items that you are legally allowed to own in both states.
Regarding private sales
To the best of my knowledge, it is perfectly legal to buy a rifle out of state and bring it home. To the best of my knowledge, it is NOT legal to buy a handgun out of state and bring it home. True?
Regarding FFL sales
Here I have no idea. If you're filling out a 4473 on a rifle or handgun, is it legal to buy it across state lines? Or would you also have to have it transferred from the FLL on site to your local FFL? I assume the FFL's on the premesis would know this, so maybe it's a moot point.
Private sales
Taking potential rifle/pistol restrictions into account, are private sales pretty much just give money, get gun? No background check, waiting period, etc? I know in Illinois this has been munged recently, but what about Indiana?
Regarding non-firearms
Again, no idea here. But I'm assuming it's always kosher to buy ammo and transport across state lines.
Indiana/Illinois specific law
Are there any specific laws to be aware of re Indiana or Illinois for cross state line purchases?
Buying guns at a gun show isn't usually what I go for (reloading for me), but it would be good to know this ahead of time. Appreciate any input so I can be sure to navigate any adventures legally
