Looks new from the pic's, my brother paid around that for a new 642, but your is better he has that lock thingy. He also bought a S&W custom 642 with moon clips. Or was it a 637? I'll have to call him and ask.

The 642 and 442 (the black finish version) are still available without the lock. Based on the grips (from what I can tell in the picture) they appear to be the current factory ones with the S&W logo. If they are that style of grips, then the gun is fairly new (assuming they are the original grips) and you did "okay."

My LGS sells that gun NIB for about $399 O.T.D. including the $10 for the state background check. The biggest question is how is the trigger? The last two j-frames, I bought had TERRIBLE triggers and left me very disappointed.

If you like the gun that's all that really matters in the end. If you aren't too impressed with the trigger, an aftermarket spring kit can help improve it dramatically.

The better pic looks to back-up my thoughts. It is not a "pre-lock" model. It is a current production "no lock" model. Still a good gun and it should serve you well.

Ed

Thanks for the info. My impression based on the paperwork that came with it is that it has some age. The DA trigger is better dry firing than the DA on my charters. Could it possibly be an older gun with newer grips? I will get out the origional packageing and see what I can learn

First Range Trip/ More Info

Ed,
I pulled the test fired envelope out of the box under the foam. The date on it is 2/24/10. I don't know if that helps. My impression is that that would be the test fire date so the firearm would pre date that.

I took it to the range with the better half this afternoon. We were shooting snubbies as she carries a charter undercover lite. The pics that follow are my first two groups. One with Hornady Critical Defense and one with Winchester PDX-1.

As you can see the PDX is slightly more accurate and being that it is the more powerful of those two loads it will most likely see carry time in the 642-1.

With Kind Regards, Vermonter.

p.s. the flier on the pdx group (high very high) is all me. I called it immediately and proceeded to shoot the 4 shot group that followed.

$350, I think you did pretty well. If it is used, it is lightly used but looking at it, it really looks like it could be new.

$350

After shooting it more I know I did well. I am researching a holster for this to add to the owb carry rotation for the summer and will pocket carry it on quick store trips etc. There is a lot of value in this thing for the $ I paid so I am phsyced there.

Those of you that own what holster recommendations can you make?

Thanks, Vermonter.

Desantis Mini Scabbard

Went with one of these. I found it tough to find LH models so this should work. I have one for the LC9 that I got rid of.
