Gun show find

Friday afternoon I was helping a friend setup a table at a local show. The table next door had a No5 Enfield on it so I had to look. It appears bubba used this as his hunting rifle and he wanted a pretty rifle. The receiver appears to be reblued and the EP marking is very light. I can see it's a FAZ built 5/45, remnants of a FTR mark and a second date of ?/4?. A clear finish was been applied to the wood.

Foreend, mag, bolt and receiver are all #'s matching, good head space with a #2 head. Bore is bright and shinny, correct 800yd backsight. Over all pretty nice, so I ask "how much?" The answer, $625... "oh, that includes this box of ammo" Then I see a steel ammo box, open it to find 800 rounds of .303 FN 174 gr ball ammo, on stripper clips, in bandoleers.:):):):)

I well be getting more .303 trigger time than expected this year:cool:

isn't most of what you spent what the ammo is worth?

Yes sir. I bought the ammo at a very good price and the No5 was free.

Put 30 rounds through this yesterday, shoots nice. The ammo is a stout load or that is the hardest rubber butt pad on earth. Probably both.

If that ammo is reloadable (or not), you were wise to buy the package, "young Grasshopper".
And fortunate that it isn't POF ammo, though most of my batches do ok.

That recoil, or rumours about it, might be what prevents "Jungles" from being more popular-not just today's ammo prices.

My Malaysian #5 was at the river today, on patrol for any lurking "Taliban soda bottles".

Shot a jungle carbine last weekend. Not awful recoil but it's not a day at the park either. Nice enough rifle for all that and worked really well.

I sorted this ammo and it came to 794 rounds, all Berdan primer FN 50 or FN 51. Fired 60 rounds yesterday between rain showers. no slow or hang fires, I think this ammo was stored in good conditions for most of it's 60+ years. Still loaded in the staggered configuration on the stripper clips.

Got to shoot my new Lithgow, starting to like the No1 rifle more and more.
