Gun show buy, good deal?

Pretty good gun show in F'burg VA this weekend. I picked up an unfired 50cal Traditions Flintlock Deerhunter for $125. No box and no papers/instructions. It's the Black/Blued one. I wasn't planning to get a flintlock but it just seemed to be a good price. I already have several cans of GOEX 3fg, but no flints. Thought I'd try to knap my own just for fun. Is $125 ok for that rifle? Anyone else have a deerhunter that can give me some pointers (loading, loads, etc)? I hope to take it to the range next weekend and sight it in at about 50 yards. I don't expect to use it for anything farther than that.

Yeah, the thought entered my mind for about a microsecond. By the way, I tried to knap a flint from an old Missouri rock I picked up several years ago. I suck at knapping. :o Guess I'll find a source to buy them.

Thanks FG. I see there are two 5/8" flints. One says 5/8" square, and the other just says 5/8" (but is 5/8" x 3/4", and lists traditions). Do I want the second one?

That's is a good deal. I paid $150 for mine and thought I made off. As for the flint, I use 5/8x3/4" and haven't had a problem with it bottoming out. But I do know that the 5/8x5/8" works fine as well.

I will tell you have a good all-around shooting rifle. The only difference is that mine is a .54 cal. They told me to use 4f in the pan. But I have fired it without a misfire using 3f in the pan and 2f for the load.

I only did it because I didn't have any 4f around. I have remedied that problem and look forward to a sunny day of shooting.

Enjoy!

3f will often work with a good lock and flint. Over time you will find it results in more FTF's than 4f, but keeping the pan and touch hole clean and the flint sharp will usually bring good results.
