Gun Safe

Okay, I would like some recommendations on some good gun safes. I don't need one that holds over 10 guns. It needs to be somewhat fireproof, and preferably cost under $500. Thanks in advance.

This article is a little old but try here:

Here in Australia by law you have to keep you guns in a certified safe, but they dont have to be very good to be certified. Most on the market are crappy tin cans.

Edit: If you go to the bottom of that page you will see "Low Cost Gun Safes" you can see what they recommend.

Look at Sentry Safes, I have a 14 gun fire proof safe I picked up off of craigslist for $200. It isn't anything fancy but is rated for 1/2 hour at 1400 degrees. Just look around and you can usually find a used one for a reasonable amount of money.

A good quality fire rated gun safe is a wise investment. I live in a house made only from timber so in a fire everything would burn very quickly so not only do I store guns in my safe I also store documents, photos, jewellery ect.

They make Sentry safes about 5 miles from my home. They are great for fire protection but not so much for burglary prevention. Basically if its high school kids out on a lark they'll stop 'em but a serious thief with a buddy accomplice will use a crowbar to ply right through. Unfortunately that's the case with most residential "consumer" safes in the under $500 price range (eg, Stack-on), which is why your best bet is to find a used, commercial quality safe. They come up for sale all the time with stores closing, auction sales, etc.

btw, I thought my safe was really good. Then its electronic lock started not working (lesson learned: avoid electronic locks esp in high humidity basement sites and stick with the old fashioned mechanical, dialing locks like Sgt & Greenleaf) so I had to call a locksmith. I figured it would take him a while to get into my safe....it took him not 5 minutes. So much for my super security safe when placed at the mercy of a safe cracker who knows his stuff. lesson #2 -- don't count on your safe alone; use lights, alarm, dog, etc. as part of a complete home security plan.

I found my safe on Craigslist ... and not what you might think.

A small company that salvages safes. My particular safe was a floor model at a Bass Pro Shops that had the combo locked inside.

He cut the bottom out, crawled inside and dismantled the door panel.

Rewelded and reinforced the bottom, refurbed the inside and sold it to me for 25% of retail.

Just a thing to remember all safes are a deterrent only. A determined burglar will still be able to get into all of the safes available given enough time. My safe is secured to the wall and the floor in a closet where it would be tough to get any leverage with a crowbar heavy enough to pry off the door. Just don't leave them out in the open.

I've got a dog and an alarm system in the house so I'm more worried about fire than a burglary. Plus several nosy in a good way neighbors help out, ones that will call you if they see a strange vehicle in the neighborhood. I think my rifles are plenty safe in my cheap Sentry.

You may be sad to hear but you are about a day late on this one. I got a Stack On fire rated 24 gun safe for $420 out the door on Black Friday. My cousin also got a good deal a couple years ago on Black Friday. It looks like Dicks Sporting Goods runs good Black Friday sales on safes. I Looked online at other stores and the safe I got averages about $900!!!

I know it's not the end all be all but it gets the job done and makes the wife happy with all the kiddos running around.

I was wanting to get a used one from Craigslist or Backpage but I didn't see any in my price range after months of watching. I finally broke down and bought new...

I've heard GSAauctions.gov also has some good stuff listed now and then.

Depending---

On your location, an inexpensive safe may be fine. Here is the list of my priorities for a safe:
1. Keep the guns away from the grand kids
2. Keep the guns away from the neighbor hood kids

Period. We also keep documents and the wife's jewelry in the thing.
