Gun Report!!!

I currently live in a housing tract on the edge of the desert. There is place there called the "pit". Almost everyday we can hear them. We have fun trying to figure out what kind of guns are being shot by the report.

Semi's are easy to identify as are rimfire. Shotguns and rifles are a little trickier.

How many of you think you can identify firearms by the sound they make?

At a distance it is fairly easy to differentiate between the snap of a rifle, the pop of a handgun and the boom of a shotgun.

Up closer, specific firearms have distinctive sounds, the AK comes to mine, as does the "eight and a ping" of the Garand, or the Ca-chunk of a G3.

The SMLE has a distinctive report.

I think I can still pick out a Model 94 in 32 Special fom the 30-30's in the woods, but maybe not.

I wonder if the urban police microphone systems in place in some cities can identify the type of gun.

I believe they're suppose to be able to identify the guns location, even with all the echoy tall/short, wide/narrow buildings distorting the sound but it would be neat if they could tell the kind of gun too.
