Gun-Repairing Judge Is Reprimanded

HOUSTON--A state judge has been reprimanded for repairing guns on the bench as he presided over jury selection in a murder trial.

The State Commission on Judicial Conduct said that District Judge H. Lon Harper "failed to act in a dignified manner" and "failed to maintain order and decorum in the courtroom."

Harper said the time he spent repairing two single-action Colt revolvers took only a few hours during jury selection that took weeks last fall.

"Almost all the judges carry guns. I just should have just kept mine under the robe instead of outside of it with a screwdriver," Harper said. "I guess I won't do any more handgun repair on the bench."

MikeK, Yes, I enjoyed reading about the judge. Sounds like a real character which is what we need more of.

The Judges big mistake was in his timing . This should have been done during the penalty phase of the trial of a Capitol nature . He should take the weapon apart and inform the defandant " If you can't convince me that you should live before I get this weapon cleaned and put back together I am going to blow your crap away right here."
Judge Roy Bean would have been proud of him at that time .

LOL. In the 100th Judicial District of Texas back in '95, the Judge was carrying, the Court Reporter was carrying, and the DA was carrying.

During a recess once, the Judge asked to see my HK. The defense attorney turned around from conferring with his client, and found the judge aiming my pistol at the wall and commenting on how comfortable it was. Then the Court Reporter had to see it, and the DA...it got compared to everyone else pistols...a five-minute recess turned into a 30 minute BS session. :D

I thought the Austin-based defense attorney was going to have a stroke right there. :)

I miss those days.

OK, can someone explain to me how we need more judges who don't pay attention to their jobs and create mistrials by acting like goofballs? I know this one happened to be messing with a gun and we all love guns, but COME ON! He was was PLAYING in the courtroom during jury selection. If he'd been playing Nintendo or reading Al Gore's book instead of doing his job and seeing that justice is done, would we still need more like him?

I don't mind the judge fiddling with his Colt six shooter, just don't use the butt of it for a gavel. I also don't like sheriffs nailing wanted posters with the butt of their Colts.

Paid for by the administration to stop hammering with fine old Colts.

I've got to go along with Don on this one. A judge playing with a gun when he should be paying attention to the proceedings may be "cool" but it is without question very unprofessional. Consider if it were you or a loved one on trial or if the defenndent was accused of killing a loved one. I'm happy we have a judge that loves guns and would like to see more pro-gun/freedom judges on the bench and particularly in the higher courts. But this type of conduct will not get this judge an appellant postition.

OK, it was unprofessional. But it was during jury selection, which the judge isn't supposed to interfere with anyway.
