Gun rental question

I have a local gun range that will credit me range and rental fees if I purchase from them and their prices are competitive.

I want a 9mm. They don't have all of the guns I want to try in 9mm but they have them in other calibers. For example they don't have a S&W M&P in 9mm but 40 cal and the only CZ they have is a CZ 83 which is 380.

Do you think that a range would sell me a few bullets to shoot or would I have to buy a box of 380, 40, and 9mm?

I know ranges are probably different but what do you guys think.

Doubtful that they have a bin o'bullets

and they'll have a hard time selling loose rounds from a box they tear open, so you'll probably have to buy by the box.

+1 they're stuck with an opened partial box of ammo.

But you can ask; they may have opened boxes that you can buy a few rounds from.

As previously stated most ranges will not sell less than a full box. However, why not contact some of your friends that shoot and explain to them what you have in mind. They may be more than willing to hand over a few rounds of each caliber. Worth a try.

Yeah I wanted to test a XD9, CZ PO1, Sig, and S&W M&P. Sincce only the Sig and XD9 are 9mm I will have to buy 40 and 380.

Just a passing thought but, if you're interested in the 9mm version of a gun and you shoot it in 40, you're actually doing a good job checking out the ergonomics of the thing in your hands.

Unless your range is different, you rent by the session, not by the hour, but you but range time by the hour. Buy an hour of range time and a box of ammo and spend your time wisely.

I don't believe you can get a feel for a gun with just a few rounds fired. You can do that just by holding them and how the grip fits your hand. If you like the looks and feel of the gun then rent it:)

Yeah you are probably right. I cold hold a few and narrow it down to 2-3 to shoot hopefully all in the same caliber.

At our range you rent a gun for $10 and get to shoot it and any other rental gun for as long as you want for a $10 range fee. With a rental, you are required to use their ammunition, which is available by the box. If you’re not sure which pistol you wish to purchase this can be an economical way to test fire a few. :)

In the long run renting a gun may help you pick the right gun.

I never thought about having to use their ammo. I hope I can use my wallyworld 9mm ammo. Usually range ammo is cheaper than the name brand stuff the gun store sells but still more than wally world in my experience. Am I wrong?

Most ranges - that rent guns - will insist you buy their factory ammo.

The mfg's that provide the range the rental guns - don't want somebody shooting reloads, etc in the guns they provide for rental / damaging guns / or hurting people.

If you don't have buddies that have similar guns / renting is a good cheap way to decide what gun you want and what caliber you want - before you spend a thousand or more dollars on a gun you don't like.

Yeah, ranges that supply rentals are a pain with them. I dont rent as I have my own guns, but I feel bad for the people that do.

I understand you need to make a few bucks, but when I wanna rent a gun that you so rarely clean and I have to pay almost double for a box of ammo, I just find that ridiculous.

$10 for a handgun rental is fine, but $29.99 for a box of 9mm is like WHAT!? I can get a box for $16.99, and your gonna raise the price more than $10.

Efff that.

p.s. - But I did suck it up and paid it once. I wanted to shoot a 75b before I bought it, and even though the rental probably wasnt cleaned or disassembled 2 years before I shot, it worked in getting the feel of it and such.

Talk to them. I know one of my local gun shops that has a range attached, if you're serious about purchasing one of their firearms and they have it as a rental, will give out a voucher for about ten rounds. You can then go up and use the rental free for you just to see if you like it. However, they don't advertise this, and I ended up finding out because I was waffling on my first purchase, when the Asst. Manager offered me the chance to use the range one.
