Range in school basement a 'fluke'

Sheboygan Press staff

When Jeff and Terri Lyon want to practice their shooting skills, they load up their competition Anschutz target rifles, their protective shooting jackets and their .22-caliber ammunition and head to — Urban Middle School.

For more than 50 years, the 68-year-old school has been home to the community's only open public indoor shooting range.

"It is quite peculiar that you can bring guns into a school zone," said Jeff Lyon, 50.

In an age of zero-tolerance policies that carry harsh consequences for the possession of weapons, alcohol or drugs on school property, the presence of a shooting range in a building filled with 11-, 12- and 13-year-olds during the day is something of a novelty, said Joe Sheehan, Sheboygan Area School District superintendent.

"It's really kind of a fluke," Sheehan said. "There are guidelines … we can use the facilities during non-school times. I wouldn't bet there are very many in the whole state." http://www.sheboygan-press.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20060207/SHE0101/602070419/1062

I may have to see when their open shooting hours are.:D

Hope this isn't a repost, I tried a search but couldn't find anything.

I learned to shoot a handgun in a high school shooting range

that operated after school hours. They closed it down a few years after I graduated.

Those were better times.

My high school was one of a number in NYC that had a rifle team and range in the basement .There was never a problem of course !! This all disappeared with the anti gun hysteria in the late 60s.

At the school district that I went to, we had a range at one of the elementary schools but we couldn't use it and had to drive 30 minuets away. Due to the drive time and number of people on the team, we were only able to shoot one target each person before we needed to pack up and get out.

Gunmoney,
Was the school in around East Stroudsburg?

If I remember correctly, East Stroudsburg split their high school into a north and a south. In the new building, they built a range near the gym. The last year I was on the rifle team I believe was first year they used the building. It was kind of weird walking down the halls carrying 4 rifles, considering most of the time we stored our guns at our range and the only time the gun were at our school was when we had an away match the next day.

I used to shoot on the school rifle teams, in both jr and sr high. We used to carry our rifle (those of us that used our own) on the bus with us to school and no one batted an eye either. We also used to carry and keep our rifles and shotguns in our trucks for hunting after school, and it was never a problem. Sorry thing how fast and far things have changed.

Wisconsin - "Concealed carry - NO WAY! We don't want guns on our streets! Instead, bring them into our school and enjoy!"

We had (may still have) a range in the HS I attended. Every Thanksgiving the JROTC would sponser a "Turkey Shoot" to raise money for the school. I was the derilect that always shot the clips holding the target for people (no easy feat for an untrained kid with those open site 22s.) This was 11 years ago in an urban school (close to 3500 students) in Texas.

the gun range under the wood shop

I went to Hayward Union high in Hayward California. We had an ROTC gun range too. Every Wednesday I rode the bus with my Remington bolt action 22, unloaded of course. The more we suppress the knowledge that guns are tools,
the more we suppress the knowledge that someone who is trained to respect his tools, the more we suppress the knowledge that someone is trained to respect, the more we suppress the knowledge of respect, the more we suppress the knowledge, the more we suppress. The more we become the suppressors.
In a couple decades we will have no knowledge of Honor. of Integrity, of Duty, of Service. We will have given up our liberty to liars and thieves who claim to make us safe, that we are no longer intelligent enough to think for ourselves and they will be right. We shall no longer deserve to be safe or free. Franklin said it first and arguably best “Those who would give up Essential Liberty, to purchase a little Temporary Safety, deserve and shall have, neither Liberty nor Safety" Suppression of our ideals has brought to the end of our country. Surely we can change this. Apathy is our greatest enemy. Do you care? I believe you do.

I noticed Mete's post and thought I 'd chime in. I graduated from E.L. Vandermeulen High School in Port Jefferson, New York, in 1968. I was on the rifle team. Our range was in the basement of the Gymnasium. I also shot there on Friday nights in an NRA Junior Club. I remember shooting regularly against three other high schools as part of our league, and also competed in matches in New York City and upstate. There was never a problem carrying cased rifles to and from.

It's true I'm pretty sure there is one at North High School also. I grew up about 20 minutes from Sheboygan. They used to have a rifle shooting team through the school

Many old highschools had shooting ranges. They later were converted into other things. My highschool (well before me) used to have a range.

i graduated in the late 70s, and shot with my rifle team for rotc in the basement shooting range. it was built in when the high school was constructed; this wasn't something added on. it was in the blueprints. It also served as a civil defense shelter, but wasn't used as a weather shelter.

The building was destroyed completely by the tornado, and it is going to be razed and rebuilt a few blocks away. I have been wondering, will they rebuild it with a range, or will they use this as one more opportunity to eliminate student contact with firearms?

The drill team used real rifles back then, now they use wooden sticks.

I belonged to a shooting club in Junior High back around 1970. It took place at the High School basement shooting range. (.22LR only) Most people still don't know about it.
