whats up latly with the gun rags, they have all been junk. where is a rag with a compleat review of the shot show 6 months ago? where are all the shoot outs between all the new pocket pistols,9's,40's,45's,compacts,fullsize,DOA's etc...the concealed carry annual usualy comes out in a few months 1997,1998 were good, 1999 was garbage. Whats going on?

They need new blood. ( New authors that is) Quick! Fire up your word processor and start writing "The 1911 Was OBsolete 50 Years Ago!" or "Glocks are Plastic Trash!" or some other non-controversial subject. Have fun and make money too!

They are devoting too much of their space and money to S&W apologists. They have had plenty of time to stop doing their advertising for them. Really only Soldier of Fortune has promoted the idea of boycotting them.

Tell you what tests I'd like to see. A test of the Kahr, Glock 23/27, Stealth, Ruger P-95, S&W 6906/4013, Sig 229, Taurus PT-940, Beretta Cougar 8040 or maybe the 9000S, & HK Compact 40. Then review a wide variety of concealable holsters. Then use a BUNCH of different ammo.

But that would be asking too much I guess,

I want to see a test of the production .45's
Try to keep them all around the same price range so things will stay fair.

Yeah, they could use some new authors. Especially when you read a reprint of some guys article that you already read in another magazine.

I say that we all do independent testing with all sorts of weapons, bullets, targets etc. then put it all together and sell it as the "DEFINITIVE" work on everything about guns.

Then we can all sit back, make money and have nothing else to do because we've solved all of the problems. :)

Maybe they figure since there at TFL we solve all of the debatable issues and do enough Glock bashing that they just don't have much to say.

Until them, we'll just keep on reading the same old stuff.

Anybody here remember "Handgun Tests" from about two decades ago? Now THAT was a magazine! Similar to the "Gun Tests" of today (they purchased all of the guns that they reviewed and accepted no gun ads or free samples) but an actual magazine with about 60-100 pages per issue. Anybody know what ever happened to them?

There's a simple solution to this delema. Write or call the Gun magazine(s) in question and tell um that if they don't give you what ya want you'll stop buying there product. They want your $4.95 or whatever the going rates are these days. If enough people make a stink they'll change the format post haste! So get everybody to complain. Simple!

I remember Handgun Tests well; excellent articles, written with what I hoped was some tongue in cheek humor. Tended to be a little graphic in their possible defense scenarios. As I recall, they went bankrupt in the early 80's.

Did you ever stop and wonder why we are such a hard bunch to satisfy as far as a gun rag is concerned?
What's the median age/guns owned, built, smithed/yrs shooting/ rounds fired/ animals taken/ matches particapated in/ammo loaded/ ect, ect of the average member here?

Think about it, there's one hell of a knowledge base right here. That's why we can't find a gun rag we like ;)

I think that Pedersen's was bought out a year or so ago. What has happened is that if you check out the ownership of all the top gun magazines they are owned by the same corporation. Thats why you see the same article in Guns & Ammo, Shooting Times, Pedersen's Hunting, etc. It really sucks as there is no competition between the magazines any longer so why should they care. I am a gun nut who subscribes to every one of them but if this keeps up thats gonna change. They all have e-mail addresses so let them know you are tired of the way they are doing business. Tell them to cut the b.s. of running the same article in all the magazines. So far I have not recieved a reply. The bottom line is they want to produce their magazines as cheaply as possible and to hell with the subscribers.

All joking aside, since this is America, someone will come up with a new and better magazine. That someone could just be one of our own TFLers. 10 years ago NOONE thought that Windows would replace DOS. When I was in High School we were taught QBASIC. Which is not like a lost and forgotten language right there with DOS.

Point being that we don't have to sit by and take it. If these guys don't respond to the publics demand then they will fold and someone else will take their place.

Personally, I've canceled my subscription to Guns, Guns & Ammo as well as Handguns. The only one I'm getting is American Handgunner. They seem to have better "stuff".

I agree with TORPEDO and M16, write, e-mail or call and let them know how you feel.

Gun rags? Best bet for all fire arm related stuff is right here at TFL,the 1911 Forum, etc. Info and input 24/7. Sure,I still read Gun Test and American Handgunner but my primo information source is on-line. Ya say ya want pictures Johnny? Just about every gun manufacturer has a web-site with pictures galore. Gun rags are just about obsolete,it's the onset of rigor mortis we've been noticing.

Well, different opinions is what makes horse races. I usually read the RKBA articles and suchlike. I have a low interest level in "new" handguns, generally, so nobody's gun tests mean a lot. I've always figured that if any magazine is "half-interesting", they've done about as good as they can do.

I stay with G&A on account of the Guru and Skelton, Seyfried, et al...

If I run across somebody's stack of various mags, I ALWAYS find at least one or two articles in each of them which seems worth reading. I have NEVER found that every article in any magazine is interesting.

Art, I think Seyfried is gone from Guns & Ammo. I agree though the only thing worth reading in it now is the Guru and Skelton. Seyfried is at Rifle and Handloader now. He does come up with some interesting and different stuff. TFL is the best because you have a tendency to get honest unbiased answers. Now if somebody could come up with a computer you could use comfortably before going nitey nite from your bed that would be nice.

What's happened is what you are on now: the internet. In my experience and speaking for myself only, the rags are nothing more than paid endorsements for a given manufacturer. I have been burned from reading the latest evaluation by Perry Powderburn or Gary Gungrease more than I care to admit.

Sure, I still love to pick one up at an airport so I can make some liberals mad on the plane but when it comes to questions about fit, form function or buying I go to a great site like TFL.

Most gun magazines will only print rosey, upbeat stuff. I subscribed to Gun Tests for a year, but din't renew because they only had 3 or 4 tests per issue and usually 1 or 2 were of no interest to me. I agree: TFL is a great resource.

If you live near a Barnes and Noble that has a Starbucks or other coffee shop, one can browse the rags for free and have a latte.

Since they live on the ads anyway, they haven't lost anything.

That SW interview does stink. Handguns had a slew of very negative letters in the following issue.

Well I do subscribe to most of them, but have seriously thought about some cancellations. Peterson was bought out by the Brits, so you can see why they seem to stand by S&W. I am one of these people that keeps every gun gag I get, for reference purposes. Seems like about every 5 years or so, the same basic subjects get rehashed all over again. Frankly, they have gotten boring, and in some cases rehash the same mistakes over and over again. Kind of like Hitler's big lie. Tell it enough times and it becomes truth. Nowadays, when I see one of these "big lies" I call the editor out on it. In about 10 cases, only one has had the decency to answer me, and even admit he made an error, based on the repetitiveness of the statement.
About the only three magazines I take much stock in are Rifle, Handloader and Guntests, and even the first two are starting on a downhill slide. Their authors would give you the courtesy of answering your letters, but have discontinued that practice since the likes of Ross Seyfried came on board.
As great and well known as Jack O'Connor and Elmer Keith were, thay always seemed to find time to answer letters from their readers. I guess the new high and mighty just can't be bothered with us peons. Too damn busy playing with their freebies.
Well, if we stop buying their rags, then the advertisers will leave and they'll be collecting unemployment checks. Hmmm. Not a bad idea.
