Gun preference evolution.

In the beginning... I was a Ruger fanboy.

Now I have seen the ways of Smith and Wesson M&P pistols but I'm still learning. Feel like I've got the semiauto pistols and 22s figured out but still evolving/learning on shotguns and center fire rifles. Not only what's "best" but what works for me best and what I prefer.

That's part of my story.

What's yours? How have your gun preferences changed with experience, age, knowledge or otherwise?

Did you go AK to AR? Revovlers to semiautos? 10mm to 22LR?

Weeellllllll.................I ain't nobody's fanboy myself and the term sets me off when applied to me but I still catch your drift..........

I'm 60 years old so am now more of a fossil than a evolving sort anymore...this ol dog don't like many new tricks any more.

However I've had my times and they started with a single shot .22 that my dad gave me for plinking and hunting back when dinosaurs roamed. From there it went to a 20 gauge and archery................

then archery for the longest time..........from there to a couple rifles.......a remy 700 bdl and a ruger no.1, both in 30-06.........they took their share of large game for decades.......then:

I got old and got a 44mag ruger redhawk, a 1894 marlin in a 44mag, a rossi 45 long colt, a marlin 30-30, a marlin 45-70, a savage .308, a BFR 45-70, a ruger 357mag.........an so on into more revolvers............

I don't know if that's evolution or just plain firearm dependency and a new scenario to give my shrink fits.......................but I've learned a lot and continue to do so.........it's become a science as well as an art and so that's what I want.........

guns baby.........it's what's for dinner

My evolution pretty well followed the historical evolution. My 1st hadnguns were all SA revolvers, then I got into DA revolvers, SA pistols, DA/SA pistols and now I prefer Glocks for serious social work. I still own and use some of the older designs, but if my life is at stake I'll use the newer designs.

Good response.

I just this weekend learned another lesson. I really thought the REM 870 was my do it all shotgun. I had a mossberg 590 in my youth and enjoyed it. Well in between now and then I busted my shoulder. Yes its been years and has healed up. I Have decent form and a good recoil pad. Anyways...shooting that gun this weekend I really feel a semi auto would better serve me.

I'm not talking about chasing fads of to turn buying guns into get another forum for consumerism...just evolving in what is appropriate for us and changing our gear accordingly.

My first rifle that I bought and payed for was a mini14 25 years ago. 25 years later I bought a Ruger mini14. I have other rifles also.

There's no shame in jumping on a bandwagon, sometimes you find something good by following someone else's experience.

Yes, I've evolved over time ...about 50 yrs shooting now ( started when I was about 10 yrs old or so )....and over time, I've been influenced by family members, what I trained with in the military, what I like to collect, what I like to shoot today in terms of platforms and calibers....

Revolvers....I've always liked the platform. Colt revolvers / their grip - doesn't fit my hands ...where the S&W Revolvers fit my hands very well. In my youth I shot a variety of S&W revolvers... .22 / .38 spl / .357 mag and .44 mag....and today my collection mostly centers around the .357 mag ( about 10 or so model 19's, 27's, 28's, 66's, 686's ....and a few in .22 mod 18 and 617 ...and a few in .44 mag ...mod 29's and 629's. I like shooting them all ...in 2 1/2", 4", 6" and 8 3/8" barrels. If I give a few to the kids ...I'll still always have a model 27 nickel, in a 4" .... .357 mag...can't ever let it go.

I've recently gotten an infatuation with single action revolvers....and Freedom Arms specifically ...and had one made in a 4 3/4", octagon barrel, premier grade in .357 mag ...and its a great gun.

In semi-auto's ....I'm mostly a 1911 guy / and I like well made guns ..so to me it means Wilson Combat. I prefer 5" guns ...and 1911's in 9mm and .45 acp are my favorites. My primary carry gun is a 5" Wilson CQB in .45 acp ...but my primary practice gun is a 5" Wilson in 9mm... I have a few Sig Sauers too ....226's, 239's, X Five...etc and that's where I mix in the .40 S&W caliber ...and some 9mm...but the 1911's are my favorites. I put 6 boxes or more a week thru my 1911's .../and I have other 1911's from Kimber, Ed Brown, Les Baer...but my Wilson's are my best guns.

Rifles...don't care about them / AR's are boring to me ...too easy to shoot ../ although I do have some lever action and bolt action rifles...Browning, Henry, Winchester...in .22, .357 mag, .30-06 ---- I don't shoot them much.

Shotguns ....I have a lot of em. Mostly I have Browning O/U's ...for clays, birds ...guns like the Citori XS Skeet ...is my all around gun ...and I have them in 12ga, 20ga, 28ga and .410 ...and I shoot them a lot ...( 250 shells a week at least ).

and I reload ....for metallic in 9mm, .40, .45 acp, .38 spl, .357 mag and .44 mag....and in shotshellls in 12ga, 20ga, 28ga and .410 ....so I like that side of the hobby as well....

I gravitate to historic, collectible, hard-to-find, odd-ball, and finely made guns. These are the things that grab my attention and make me drool.

When it comes to shooters, it's nothing very special for me - LC9 for the pocket; Glock 17 for home defense, Savage 30-06 for hunting. I do have a nice Beretta O/U for sporting clays and skeet, but in the world of O/U's it wouldn't be all that special either.

Started out with "evil black guns".

Ended up shooting "evil black powder".

The evolution from shooting military style semi auto rifles to enjoying shooting cap and ball revolvers... well: Let's just say it took me thru many other interesting steps along the way.
