Gun Magnet -- anyone use one?

I've been interested in the gun magnets too, I can think of a couple of good uses for them. My only concern is will it magnatize my gun.

No, it shouldn't magnetize your gun.

In order to magnetize something, you have to pass the magnet along the length of the item to get the polarity of the atoms to align.

That would take a long time, I would think (it seemingly takes forever with a needle), and I suspect that once you fired it several times the jolting and heat would knock the atoms back out of alignment.

I used to have a large round magnet gorilla glued under my desk. I duck taped a rag under there over it and kept a Nagant 1895.

Not unless, as Mike pointed out, you attempted to use the magnet to magnetize your gun by repeatedly running down the length of your gun. Even at that, it is gonna take a long time.

Mike - if you try it, please post a review. As a side note, the gun magnets I've seen before were rare earth. Not sure if that one is or if it will actually hold well.

There was a Wanna Be on another forum in Az. pushing a magnetic holster. The guy claimed to have done all kinds of testing on it and made claims that it was the holster of the future. One of the claims was that it would not magnetize the gun and the magnet would not collect debris nor would the gun when worn. He never posted his testing results, and when asked for the results, they were in the final stages of testing. I don't care to add this magnet to my box of well recommended holsters.

Interesting. I would consider using. But, with so many guns being made with polymer, alloy aluminum, zinc and what all, do check to make sure your gun will work with it.

Kinda like drawing said gun from under the desk where the magnet is holding it?

Drawing kinda involves a pulling motion...... repetitive practice .....

I got a magnet from a hardrive an mounted behind my dresser. It works great to hold my XD9. I had my Mossberg on there held with the second magnet from the hard drive. It works real good for the XD as I don't have a holster for it with the Streamlight on there. I am not sure how much weight it can hold... Pretty dang strong though.

I know that doesn't answer your question regarding that specific product, but I like the idea behind them.

Mike's right, shooting it would de-magnetize it. I wouldn't use one, I think it would scratch it drawing it out, even with a rag over it prolly.

I've used fabric covered strip magnets to hold extra shotgun barrels to safe door.....work very well, won't scratch finish.

I would doubt that any one would slide the gun against the length of the magnet as it would damage the finish. It would make more sense to pull the gun off the magnet as it is pulled towards the shooter.

These gun magnets are covered in a heavy duty semi soft plastic material so its not magnet on metal.

Secondly, it takes a LONG time and a lot of effort to magnetize a block of metal like a handgun. And as I said, the shock of shooting will rid it of any magnetization.

In order to magnetize a block of metal like a gun with a few draws, it would be strong enough to rip the fillings from your teeth... From a mile away.

Years ago I ordered some surplus Neodymium magnets that looked like Silver dollars from Harry Epstein hardware store.

The shipping carton made of cardboard arrived empty with a hole in the side. I can only imagine my magnets were stuck to the side of a truck. The replacement magnets were more carefully packaged.

I have found magnets to make great Christmas presents for little kids. 20 years I see those magnets have turned into refrigerator magnets.

 Glad they made good the loss.

Mike - if you get one, let us know how it works out. That rare earth magnet may also be good for detecting counterfeit gold coins. ;)
