Gun Lube

I put a light coat of oil on my guns every 3-4 months if they have not been fired. I also run a patch or 2 down the barrels, and keep silica packets in my safe.

Your a smart man buddy. My friends think I am crazy for oiling guns that I never shoot, and the fact I have silica packs in the bottom of my safe seems crazy to them...... I think its necessary.

I have a couple guns that i don't shoot anymore and one that does get much out door time. I have used Break Free for 30+ years and can coat a gun and come back 2 years later and it is still lubed and if any finger prints are on the oil it has not set in to the gun. It is a synthetic oil and works well as a baisc cleaner lube for most any gun needs. It does not dry out.

I see no point in dessicants, if you keep your guns coated with something and it is an area that is dry, like inside your house. Well I admit I have not stored guns at a beach house or in the full tropics but in this neck of the woods dessicant would be a last resort for something like storage in a basement or garage or worse. Modern climate control homes do not have the high humidity or temperature fluctuations to cause a cared for gun to rust. Cared for, that is.

I've always cleaned after firing, first with solvent ( Hoppes 9), then last with gun oil. With my first 1911, I wonder just what products everyone prefers- I have a friend who just coats with silicone.... Grease? Oil? Silicone? Thoughts? Thanks...

I think of dessicant as a good backup --- why else would the military stuff big packs of it in hermerically sealed jet engine storage containers? Presumably the engines are preped for storage and lubricated?

If I haven't shot a firearm, I try to lubricate it every 3 to 4 months. I use BreakFree CLP for this purpose, though I've starting using Eezox on the outside of some of my firearms. They both have rated highly in a couple of corrosion tests I've seen with Eezox getting the nod strictly for this purpose.

There are ways to store firearms for even longer periods but I do like getting the guns out and handling them even if I haven't had the chance to shoot it recently.

At the moment, I shoot mostly every gun in my collection frequently enough to keep them well oiled and in tip-top shape. But if I didn't, every quarter seems like a good idea to me. If anything, it'll get you to check up on your guns to watch for signs of rust.

Interestingly enough... Shot a friend's gun yesterday, a Colt Mark IV Government model in .380. It hadn't been cleaned before it was put into storage and it was in storage for about 4 years . Luckily, I had a bore snake and travel-size tube of Weapon Shield on me so we were able to at least clean the bore and lube up the slide rails. It shot well, but it did still have 4 or 5 failures to extract out of about 80 rounds - gunked up extractor for sure. We moved on to some other guns after I made him promise to take it home and give it a good cleaning and inspection. A gun like that deserves more attention and care, IMV.

I use hoppes #9 for cleaning (love the smell) and rem oil to lube
i tend to clean and lube my guns about once every two weeks (i carry one for duty)

+1 light oil and wipe

I have several revolvers and pistols on my collectors (non shooting) licence, some unfired (Uberti Colt Dragoon) and every mont or so, I pull them out of the safe to check them for anything untoward (rust, dust, moisture) I just cycle them, inspect them, a light spray with Inox and wipe them dry, occasionally a wad or 3 up the hole (just for fun)

They all look great.... works for me :D
