Gun-grabbing liberals?

It would seem to me that this board is filled with American, Christian Rebublicans, and most of 'em a bit older than me too (I'm 23). Or that's at least the feeling I often get. Sometimes, being a Finnish, non-christian (a heavy-metal listening, dressing in black atheist, in fact :D) and a tad leftish-wing politically, I feel a bit out-of-place... (Regarding the subject line: Sometimes the term "gun-grabbing liberal" is used. I always seem to think "Yup, that's me. Come trouble, I'll grab my Walther." :D.) Usually I just try to steer clear of the political stuff, but for once, it would be interesting to see if there are others like me somewhere here... So, anyone else feel different in this crowd?

(I hope I don't get new enemies over here from telling what I'm like... ;))

Welcome, Tony. I suspect you'll find after you spend a bit more time here that we're a more diverse crowd than you think (although clearly Americans are the dominant nationality). There are, for example, widely divergent views here on economic issues, social issues, and religion. And on music. What unites us all is our belief in the principle of RKBA.

I'll also suggest that if you examine the reasons why you believe in RKBA, you might also find that the basic principles there affect your other beliefs as well. Individual liberty and personal responsibility are powerful concepts. Too bad they frighten so many people today.

Tony: I think you'll be suprised at how many of us are actually Libertarians and/or atheists. Rather than Republican Christians.

Well Brett,
I'm a Libertarian, Evangelical Christian. Is that possible, or am I just confused? ;) Don't know why so many people think that Christians can't be Libertarians. Some of my Fundamentalist cousins may blast me for this one, but from my personal studies, I believe that Jesus would have been a Libertarian too. One thing I've always found interesting - Simon the Zealot (a member of a political group that advocated the overthrow of Rome by physical force), one of the chosen twelve, is never referred to as Simon the FORMER Zealot.

Oh, and Tony,
I also enjoy Heavenly Metal (Heavy Metal with a Christian theme), I feel I look best in Black, believe that morality can not be forced on people through legislation, and also own a Walther. See, we're really not all that different, now are we?

might get flamed for this but the position you describe is dominant and vocal.

So hang in there. We need to show that gunowners are diverse.

I'm a Christian Libertarian phlisophically too, I like heavy metal, beer, guns, and all the other evil stuff that the avg anti * zealot would save me from, the whole of it being freedom. You don't have to fit a stereotype because you're a Christian.

I don't really want to get into another religo-political flamewar, so I'll just say this. I could care less about somebody's race, religion, ethnicity, phenotype, or any other piece of irrelavant personal trivia. Intellectual diversity, individuality, and a belief in freedom are all that count! Freiheit uber alles!

Oh, Tony.s, this comes from a 22-year-old, libertarian, skeptic-atheist, metal/tekno-listening, gun freak. There are plenty of us around. :D

Later,
Chris

Gusgus: "Libertarian and/or atheist" takes in 3 permutations: Libertarian non-atheist, Libertarian atheist, and non-libertarian atheist. What's the matter, don'tcha speak boolean?

Ditto, excepting I'm Pro-Life as I think that any procedure that ends a human life prematurely is murder. My only exception would be to save the life of the Mother; if you can't save both then at least save one.

Don't own a Walther yet though.

... But as for me, give me liberty or give me death!

I'm with ya, Tony. It's the issue of RKBA that brings us together here. We're are pretty diverse. I'm moderately liberal socially, conservative fiscally; agnostic; hold my nose and vote for Repubs for the most part; Like the Constitution Party the best of all parties. I think the Republicans' repeated and ongoing attempts to abridge the 1st, 4th, 5th, and 7th amendments is ALMOST as bad as the Dems attempt to annihilate the second, and NOW, the Repubs no longer stand up for the 10th, either, so they're becoming less and less appealing all the time.

Thanks for your replys! I feel more like I belong here immediately... :) (I've actually been hanging around here for a while, even posted a bunch of times, but with all the traffic here it's easy to miss a certain persons posts.)

Hey Gusgus, a few questions: is Heavenly Metal something like White Metal (Black Metal music with Christian lyrics) or something totally different? If you're into the more power / melodic stuff, might I suggest trying Stratovarius? A Finnish band that has become quite big in Europe, some Finnish Christian groups like their music due to the lyrics. Also, what exactly is a Libertarian? :)

More on subject of this board, I do agree with David Roberson. Having unusual beliefs like the RKBA has certainly made me stubborn about some things... :) I find that I'm less likely to go along with something I don't really believe in / accept than a lot of other people, even if I do get some irritating difficulties by my actions...

Anyways, I just wanted to thank you guys in putting my mind at ease. :) Be seeing you here at TFL...

Tony,
A simple definition of a Libertarian is this - someone who believes that people should be free to live their lives as they see fit, without government intervention. You may do as you wish with YOUR money, YOUR property, YOUR body, as long as you do not harm anyone else. I personally have very strong views on right and wrong, but it's God's place to change people's hearts, not government's.

Heavenly Metal was a term used in the '80s and early '90s. Probably very similar to White Metal. One of the most popular bands was Stryper, followed by White Cross, Daniel Band, Bloodgood, Messiah Prophet, etc. Actually I have always appreciated a wide variety of music, from Classical, to Metal, to Ska, to Rap. In the same way, I appreciate all kinds of firearms, from the Makarov, to the Styer Scout.

No matter what our religious views, music tastes, or firearms preferences, most on these boards share this common thread - we wish to be allowed to enjoy our sport, and to defend life, family, liberty and property, without tyrannical intervention.

I'm not American either, not forcibly quite Christian (just look
around how many ministers and priests don't hold up to their own
standards or are simply irrealist), I like guns (in fact, Finns and
Swiss have more common that they'd both believe), I don't like
liberals, socialists, commies and anti* (freedom, guns, car), tax
raises and some other ways to siphon off my resources to spread them
thinner.

And, yeah, I like heavy metal, as well as Marilyn Manson ("in a forst
full of trees, you can't see the sh!t on your knees") and some other
bands/musicians which are not too Christian. OTOH, I'm a honest guy.

Maybe we could organize a European TFL end-of-the-Summer meet, or all
come over to the US to have some SERIOUS fun.

Maybe we should have a TFL prairie dog convention. :)

Tony,

I’m a non-hyphenated American unless I’m arguing with someone. ;) In such
cases, I’m full-blooded, sometimes bloodied Irish! I’m told I’m no Christian
and I despise the Republican wing of the Democrat Party almost as much as
the Democrat mainliners. However, I do recognize there are exceptions
among the would-be tyrants.

I’m not quite three times your age and it’s a safe bet I outweigh you (darn
it!). I like BOTH kinds of music: Country AND Western.

Well, if I must ‘fess up.... I live in the past with 400-500 LPs (those are
called “records”, son! :D) They run the gamut from Oscar Brandt GI songs
from Korea, German military marching songs from W.W.II (the BIG one), a
“few” C&W and about 100 classical records. Heck, there’s elevator music in
there (Ray Conniff) and some funny stuff (Crazy Smith and the Redheads).

Heavy Metal hurts my ears and offends my taste. You’re welcome to it - let’s
both wear headsets and it’s nobody’s business what we listen to. (With
headsets, you can turn the volume up until your eardrums meet in the
middle - none of my affair. :D)

About the only time I wore all black was when I used to do Johnny Cash
imitations in bars. (Yes, “for drinks!” Why else??)

I’ll argue politics, cars, wine, women and song with anyone so long as we can
do it fairly, without serious insults, physical pain, or loss of friendship. Oh,
and don’t scare the horses.

But all of this fades into insignificance, my friend, when we begin to discuss
the Second Amendment, the rest of the Bill of Rights, and Constitutional Law.

It’s not your business, my business, or the government’s business what folks
do or do it with - unless somebody ends up hurt. And “hurt” does not mean
this whining, wimpy-butted “But I’m offended” because someone said a
prayer in my presence or said not to smoke and swear in his home or car.

‘Bout danged time we cut each other some slack, set aside our differences,
showed a bit of respect for others’ beliefs, and (most importantly) united to
regain the freedoms we were once given free (at the price of Americans’
blood), took for granted, and have nearly lost.

Let’s git after it.

------------------
Either you believe in the Second Amendment or you don't.
Stick it to 'em! RKBA!

Mussi, the line is:
"You can't see the forest for the trees
and you can't smell your own S*** on your knees..."

Yes, I listen to a lot of metal and punk myself. Even bands who disagree with me strongly and wouldn't give me the chance I give them, like Rancid. And some country (mostly only the Johnny Cash kind) and some classical (mostly only Beethoven) and a lot of other stuff. I too consider myself a libertarian and a "small r republican" as my history teacher used to say.
I don't have a religion. And I dress any way I feel like dressing on my own time. Usually that means jeans and a t-shirt or sweater, which probably is a clue to my lazy, bland personality.
Oh, and I'm a middle-school English teacher, which should make me as liberal as can be, but it doesn't seem to be taking. The history teacher is more a right-wing zealot than a libertarian, so he and I are plotting revolution together. We're also the basketball coaches, so we figure we control an elite cadre of the most athletic and trainable boys in the school . . . . . .
But perhaps I've said too much. ;)

I believe that the musical arts reached perfection with Oingo Boingo. Followed closely by Big Country (the rock band from England, not country music). ;)

TFLers are an interesting and diverse bunch, stick around and you will be amazed by the different opinions on everything. Though we do tend to be mostly republicans here there are very strong libertarian leanings. We even have a few people who are voting Gore (can't quite figure that one out, but not my place to make fun). Most of us are Americans, but with all sorts of backgrounds, religions (other than 1911 vs. Glock even :) ) and experiences.

And one more thing, at 23 your not really that strange. We had a thread here about ages, and I'm guessing that the average age was in the late twenties early thirties.

I'm a 27 yr old registered Republican with a large (and growing since I read "Atlas Shrugged" a few weeks ago) Libertarian leaning.

I won't try to take your guns if you don't try to take mine. :)

------------------
The first step is registration, the second step is confiscation, the final step is subjugation.

"Heavenly Metal" Wow, I'm going to have to remember that one. Imediately this image popped into my head, obviously this guy is rocking out to Jesus.

This dude's rockin out to Jesus.

Uhhh, Not quite, MTAA,
Here's a picture of Stryper, the "bad boys" of Heavenly Metal, from the mid '80s. They where at the time, an alternative to KISS. Had serveral gold ablums, and even had videos on MTV.
