Gun Finishes, Good, Bad & The Ugly

I'm going to have a 1911 built for me and I'm thinking what finish? There are so many. Armor Tuff, Kim Pro,Bear Coat, Black T, etc. What really is a good wearing finish? Why does the FBI like Black T? Help! Thanks, Sam

Sorry Sam can't help you. Just saw out in the topic area that this would be post #100,000 for the forum & thought that I would grab it.

Well, how about just plain old Parkerizing?

My 3 1911's wear it, as does my race revolver. Relatively tough, corrosion resistant, and really business-looking!

In my opinion Armor-Tuff is the best of the black finishes.

For silver, hard chrome or NP3 for steel guns.
On an alloy gun I like NP3.

The Armor-Tuff is soooo much more wear resistant than Black-T or Bear Cote.
It may be twice as tough.

Very impressive and have it on several guns.

For looks, I would go with an "E"lectroless nickel finish. For durability I would get the Electroless nickel as a base and then get it hardchromed over that. I believe that is what the NP3 process is, someone correct me if I am wrong.

I saw a custom 1911 at the local gunstore with a bear coat finish, and I have to say it looked rather nice for a blued type gun.

Hard to beat hard chrome on the frame and deep blue on the slide. Purdy purdy!

Then there are all the spray-on resin finishes, that would include black-T, Bearkoat, Norrells moly resin, METACOLIII, etc., they are all about the same. Excellent resistence to corrosion, on the high side of wear resistence, most add teflon (black t, NP3) or molybendium as a dry-lubricant. Not really good looking though, except for my semi-gloss FAL...it's purdy too!

I would Hard Chrome the frame and have a Blued slide and blued controls...

JMHO, ;)

MTAA - According to Robar, NP3 is a "composite" of electroless nickel and PTFE (polytetrafluoroethylene). The PTFE is what makes the finish so darned slick. I have NP3 on my P220, and it's really good stuff. It completely smoothed out the trigger and other internals, and it's very durable and corrosion resistant.

Be sure to look at Robar's http://www.robarguns.com/metal3.html
I've been under the impression that NP3 is better for coating moving parts (inside and out) and that Roguard is best for slides and larger flat external areas. Does Birdsong's Black-T have a website yet?

Can anyone post pictures of their guns? We could post a picture of the gun with information telling what kind of finish it has and how many rounds have been fired through it.

I already have something of this nature posted for Roguard and NP3 at: http://www.ont.com/users/kolya/HiPo.htm

Gee, I thought that I bought a new gun and didn't know anything about it! BTW, Sam, nice name!! SamC

Hi guys,

I just got my HK compact USP refinished from Arizona Response System. I got my original black slide refinished in Metacol III matte silver and the extractor refinished in the black satin finish. They did a really good job. Sorry I don't have a dig. cam or I'd have posted pics to show you all.
