gun finish options, durable and dark

I have a steel baby eagle compact with a matte black finish on it. There are some spots left unfinished for some reason (like under the slide release). Its a carry gun so I would like something a little bit scratch resistant but also dark. Not knowing diddly about finishes, any recommendations for what types and where I might be able to see what different finishes look like?

You can check out www.bearcoat.com
Also you can do it yourself with products from Brownells. another option is from www.molyfusion.com.

BearCoat isn't low cost BUT the end product is superb ! I have just recently finished working on 2 Ruger MK II actions with "Moly Fusion" and at the same time did the outside of one with this product to reduce/prevent corrosion since the shooter carries it ALL THE TIME in his truck and when in the woods. We have a problem with humidity and he isn't known for cleaning his gear after every trip.
Hope this helps.

Black chrome over hard chrome would get my vote for what you want. Accurate Plating and Weaponry would apply it for me if I was buying.

If you need to keep on a budget the Brownells epoxy paint over park will be cheap, and touchup is a breeze. You can do both yourself, even the park on your gas grill.

I have been applying Gun Kote for the past 6 years. It is extremely durable and comes in any color you want. Check out my web site. All the firearms on the site have been coated with Gun Kote. Quick turnaround and reasonably priced. $150 for a handgun. I coat all the parts, inside and out.

Have a look.

i have done several guns using that spray on teflon based parkerize finish from brownelles.its fairly inexpensive.regular solvents wont remove it.its very easy to do.1.clean metal(degrease and remove all traces of oils)2. spray it on 3. bake it in your oven.(baking it in your oven opens up the pores in the steel, finish can get in there and stick)they have grey and black.

Check out Mac's Shootin' Irons for complete info on our Tuff-Gun (RTM) finish. It's Gunkote over Parkerizing and we can do it in a variety of colors and combinations. 22+ years experience with this finish and a two week turn around time. Pistols are $105 to $120 and rifles/shotguns are $130 to $145. Prices include dis/reassembly and a new finish on every metal part of the firearm. Thanks, Mac.
