gun control paper

So I have to write a 3-4 page paper on a political topic for my english class. One of the topics we could choose was gun control. Most seniors in high school don't care about this issue, but I do. So I was wondering if anyone could give me some web sites, names of books, magazine articles, etc. on gun control. It would help me out greatly.

Thank You,

There is a lot out there. You might have better luck finding an appropriate site after you've narrowed down your topic.

Good luck!

Here are some sites with far more information than you'll ever use for a high school paper. :)

First, statistics pages: http://justfacts.com/gun_control.htm http://www.gunowners.org/fs9901.htm

Stories of people who used guns in self defense: http://www.healylaw.com/self-def.htm http://home.pacbell.net/dragon13/gunuses.html

Hope that helps.

"Is there anything wrong with a woman preferring the dignity of an armed citizen? I don't like to be coddled and I don't like to be treated like a minor child. So I waive immunity and claim my right -- I go armed." -- Longcourt Phyllis in Beyond This Horizon by Robert Heinlein

Read the book by John Ross "Unintended Consequences" if you haven't already. 860+ pages but it gives you a lot of gun control history in America and elsewhere. It's fairly accurate, though you have to sort through some fictional parts. :)

I'd narrow your scope to one aspect of gun control. For example, write about just one of these:

** Is it right?
** Is it constitutional?
** Will it work?
** Does it cause unintended consequences?

I'd suggest including some actual reference to U.S. Code and maybe some state laws too concering firearms. The actual code can easily be accessed on the internet. The tough part is findng where things are. There is a good summary of all of this under "federal laws" at the NRA site under ILA that can help one get started. It's a good way to prove the anti's wrong on many of their claims. But the liberal media will never tell you this.

Among other things, federal law prohibits gun dealers from selling to juveniles, yet the anti-gun movement will claim "any child" can easily get a gun anywhere. Nowhere in it is there anything saying "...except at gun show" (the "gunshow loophole"). Anti's will claim that "unlicensed dealers" can sell guns at the shows without requiring background checks, yet it is illegal to deal firearms without a license. Find the actual referenced to these things and others, and anyone who disagrees has simply not read them or can't read.

Roadkill,

Good choice of topic and you've gotten some excellent advice from other members. Narrowing your scope will allow you to write more effectively and convincingly. One thing to keep in mind is that there really isn't any such thing as "gun control." It's really control of our 2nd amendment rights and freedoms as American citizens. Whenever I discuss or write about "gun control" I always put that phrase in quotes and use the phrase "rights control" (generally not quoted). This small point is helpful in broadening your audience. Not every person is interested in guns but most ( I hope) are interested in their rights and freedom. Good luck!
