Gun-control group rewards candidates
By Fred Brown

June 2 - A bipartisan political action committee dedicated to supporting candidates who support gun controls handed out its first two checks at a kickoff rally Thursday.
State Rep. Sue Windels, an Arvada Democrat, and Heidi Frey, an Arapahoe County Republican, each got $1,000 from the newly formed Colorado Gun Violence Accountability Project.
"We probably have given away half our treasury today," said Eileen McCarron, who chairs the organization.
But Colorado GAP - it treats "gun violence" as one word to make the acronym - intends to raise more money to support other candidates based on their positions on gun control, she said.
Frey is challenging incumbent Rep. Lauri Clapp, R-Englewood, in a Republican Party primary for the House District 37 nomination. Windels is hoping to unseat Sen. Jim Congrove, R-Arvada, in the November general election. Clapp and Congrove are strong gun-rights supporters.
McCarron, who identified herself as a Democrat, said the group filed its incorporation papers this week, spurred by the Colorado legislature's failure to pass Republican Gov. Bill Owens' package of gun controls.
"I'm sick and tired of the tyranny of the pro-gun activists," added Lisa Astrella, a Republican member of the group's steering committee.
The group's e-mail address is coloradogap@usa.net.
