Gun-control group rewards candidates
By Fred Brown
Denver Post Capitol Bureau Chief

June 2 - A bipartisan political action committee dedicated to supporting candidates who support gun controls handed out its first two checks at a kickoff rally Thursday.

State Rep. Sue Windels, an Arvada Democrat, and Heidi Frey, an Arapahoe County Republican, each got $1,000 from the newly formed Colorado Gun Violence Accountability Project.

"We probably have given away half our treasury today," said Eileen McCarron, who chairs the organization.

But Colorado GAP - it treats "gun violence" as one word to make the acronym - intends to raise more money to support other candidates based on their positions on gun control, she said.

Frey is challenging incumbent Rep. Lauri Clapp, R-Englewood, in a Republican Party primary for the House District 37 nomination. Windels is hoping to unseat Sen. Jim Congrove, R-Arvada, in the November general election. Clapp and Congrove are strong gun-rights supporters.

McCarron, who identified herself as a Democrat, said the group filed its incorporation papers this week, spurred by the Colorado legislature's failure to pass Republican Gov. Bill Owens' package of gun controls.

"I'm sick and tired of the tyranny of the pro-gun activists," added Lisa Astrella, a Republican member of the group's steering committee.

The group's e-mail address is coloradogap@usa.net.

Excuse me?

From the Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary (www.m-w.com):

Main Entry: tyr·an·ny
Pronunciation: 'tir-&-nE
Function: noun
Inflected Form(s): plural -nies
Etymology: Middle English tyrannie, from Middle French, from Medieval Latin tyrannia, from Latin tyrannus tyrant
Date: 14th century
1 : oppressive power <every form of tyranny over the mind of man -- Thomas Jefferson>; especially : oppressive power exerted by government <the tyranny of a police state>
2 a : a government in which absolute power is vested in a single ruler; especially : one characteristic of an ancient Greek city-state b : the office, authority, and administration of a tyrant
3 : a rigorous condition imposed by some outside agency or force <living under the tyranny of the clock -- Dixon Wecter>
4 : a tyrannical act

Now, Ms Astrella, explain to me how people who want to be able to legally defend themselves from aggression qualifies as "tyranny."

No, never mind, you can't, because fools like yourself twist words to mean whatever you want. "Tyranny," to you, means "Disagreement with my ideas."

Get it straight, Ms Astrella: YOU and people like you are the tyrants, wanting to force your will on others. All we gun owners want is to be left alone. We don't try to force people to own guns; if you want to be a defenseless sheep in a world of wolves, that's your own problem.

But don't you DARE accuse us of tyranny simply because we refuse to be food.

Sincerely,
Coinneach Fitzpatrick

OK, I'm calmer now. Somewhat.

$1,000 to sell out the Constitution and the self defense rights of millions of Americans? Hey - good trade! ;)

These people are so warped.

Nice letter. Take care, Coinneach.
