Gun control and the upcoming election.

I'm sure that most of you are keeping a very close eye on gun control legislation. What does everybody know about the Presidential candidates stand on gun control? From what I have seen Bradley wants us to go back to the days where we throw rocks for self-defense! He wants ALL handguns to be licensed and registered!! Yeah right! I personally like Mccain so far, him being a veteran and all. Bush is from Texas so I imagine that he's pretty gun-friendly. What about Gore? I'll be honest, gun control is just about the only issue that means all that much to me in the upcoming election. At 26 I don't really have to worry about social security anytime soon! Lol!

Positions on gun control:

Mccain: Staunchly pro whatever he feels like in a given week, and that only until the media tells him to think otherwise.

Bush: Has pro-gun support, will give in on anything up to messing with adults' access to guns. He'll agree with any law currently passed (e.g. would never repeal "assault weapon" or Brady) but won't pass new infringements.

Bradley: Supports total ban on private ownership of firearms. Wants'em now, too. Makes him look extreme.

Gore: Supports total ban on private ownership of firearms; but is patient. Won't stand in election campaign and suggest confiscations/registration that has no chance at passing. Would have to battle hard (media support, and a lot more coverage of school shootings) for the handgun licencing (which could then be extended to longguns). He's patient enough to let confiscations wait.

Battler.

Greetings, I don't think you can go wrong with either Republican candidate. My choice
is the distingushed Senator from Arizona!!!

Best Wishes,

Moving this thread to Legal and Political forum where this is a lot of discussion on the candidate's positions on gun control ....

Ala Dan,
The problem I have with The Distinguished Senator is that he has been a part of the problem for the past 17 years and I can't find much info on his voting record. Does anybody out there what his record is on gun laws passed recently?

Davet

NONE of the four candidates discussed so far are truly pro-gun. They are all, to differing degrees, anti-gun. Anyone who will not work to repeal unconstitutional gun laws is at least borderline anti in my opinion.

The best choice is to vote Libertarian. They are, as a party, completely pro-gun. If you want to stay within a "major" party, vote for Keyes. He is a true constitutionalist. If you want to vote for the lesser of the four evils, vote for Bush. JMO.

You guys forget about Alan Keyes?

The reality is that Alan Keyes has no chance at winning the nomination of the Republican Party.

Either Republicans are preferable to the Democrats. Like guns? Vote for which ever GOP candidate is on the ballot.

So?

I'll vote for who I think will do the best job. I don't care if they are on the ballot or not.

instead of not voting for someone because they can not win.

Vote for who YOU think represents your views.

If there is no acceptable candidate,
write that in:

NO ACCEPTABLE CANDIDATE

if 5% of the vote goes to no acceptable candidate, then that message will be reported

IMHO, the next president is already a lost cause
We need to elect pro RKBA local & State representatives. Maybe in 10 years, Keyes will win, for now, we need to fertilize the roots.

I'm voting for Keyes.

I vote for who I believe will be the best for this country, whether or not he is in a position to be elected.

It is pretty obvious that the Democrats are proudly against your right of self defense.
For heavens sake, we must not allow a Democrat to take the White House.
Vote for whichever Republican gets the nomination. And vote often.

Davet,
Here is McCain's voting record:John McCain
From legislative record and www.McCain2000.com

GUN CONTROL
Q: What is your overall view of gun control?
A: Bearing arms is a constitutionally protected right. With rights come responsibilities. I will continue to support effective, common sense measures that help keep firearms out of the hands of criminals, children and the mentally incompetent; that assure Second Amendment rights are exercised responsibly; and that do not preclude law-abiding citizens from the free exercise of their rights, including the right to protect themselves and their families.

Q: Where does John McCain stand on criminal "background checks" to purchase firearms?
A: I support background checks on firearm purchasers to help keep guns out of the hands of criminals.

Q: What about exempting firearm sales at gun shows and pawnshops from background check requirements?
A: I believe instant background checks should be conducted for all commercial firearms sales, including gun shows and redemption of guns at pawnshops. I helped lead the fight in the Senate to assure such sales are covered.

Q: Where does John McCain stand on federally imposed "waiting periods" for firearm purchases?
A: I have opposed federally mandated "waiting periods" because criminal background checks can be done swiftly without imposing restrictions on law-abiding citizens. Instant checks are more effective than waiting periods because police can be dispatched immediately to apprehend a criminal who is trying to obtain a weapon at the point of sale. Moreover, I can't see how we can tell a law-abiding citizen who wants to purchase a firearm for the purpose of protecting his or her family that they must wait to exercise that right.

Q: Where does John McCain stand on trigger locks?
A: Again, with rights come responsibilities. Trigger locks should be used to protect children and stop intruders from using a firearm. I was pleased to lead the effort to ensure that trigger locks are sold with every firearm."

Legislative record - 106th Congress

Voted no on Lautenberg/Kerrey Amendment to close the "gun show loophole",
Voted for Senator Craig's amendment to make background checks on gun purchases at gun shows voluntary,
Voted to require that any handgun sold or transferred by a federally licensed dealer must be accompanied by a secure storage device,
Voted not to table Senator Schumer's amendment to prohibit the unlicensed sale of guns on the internet.
Legislative record - 103rd Congress

Voted against final passage of the 1994 Crime Bill, which contained the "Federal Ban on Assault Weapons",
Voted against final passage of the "Brady Bill", which required a background check for purchases of handguns from federally licensed gun dealers.
Legislative Record - 102nd Congress

Voted against the "Brady Bill", which required a five day waiting period and background check for purchases of handguns from federally licensed gun dealers
Legislative record - 100th Congress

Voted to table the Thurmond Amendment which would have banned the manufacture, sale or importation of undetectable plastic guns.

Best piece of political advice I've seen in a long time.

The important fact is the President cannot make laws (ignoring the blatantly unconstitutional Executive Orders). Your representatives can. You need to insure that you are represented by people who will not pass unconstitutional laws and will work to repeal existing unconstitutional laws. Like me. :D

There's a RKBA POV out there that supports a Gore/Bradly administration, rather than incrementalism anti-BOR Republicans.

Draw the line NOW. Let the revolution come.

This is a firearms forum, so many people here a "one issue" voters, at least when they post. That being the case, vote for the Republicans, because the Democrats will only strip you of your gun rights, then your guns.

I agree that Keyes is an excelent candidate. The problem is he is not a viable candidate. There are dozens of other candidates which fall into this catagory. They often bring issues to the forefront of politics, but do little more. (I applaud them in their efforts, regardless of whether I agree with them or not- it is the American way)

I'm sorry, but voting for "no acceptable candidate" only serves to undermine the pro gun movement- it IS better to have Mr. Bush or Mr. McCaine in office than Mr. Gore or Mr. Bradley! They may not be ideal, but are the lesser of evils. (Though I wouldn't go so far as to say they are evil)

Not all Democrats are anti-Constitutional socialists. Occasionally one of those "real" Democrats (by "real" I mean Democrats who follow the ideals upon which the Democratic Party was founded: limited government & individual responsibility) runs for office.

Control of the Legislative Branch is much more important than control of the Executive Branch. Only the Legislature can pass laws which strip us of our unalienable, God-given Rights. Campaign and vote for those who represent your views. It is the only way we will win.

I've seen it sadi here before, but let me put it in a new light...
A vote for "less" gun control will, at best, result in more gun control. While a lot of you see this as a reason to vote for candidate who are not viable, I do not. Right now, there is NO independant candidate strong enough to win. If we keep working at it, that may change in the coming years. In the meantime, we need to retain as many of our rights as we can. As this country has demonstrated, it's a lot easier to prevent a law than to repeal one. I would love to see a libertarian white house, as would many of you I'm sure, but IT'S NOT GOING TO HAPPEN THIS TIME AROUND. I know it's the "patriotic" thing to do, to be able to say that you voted your conscience and held to your principals, but maybe you need a reality check. The truth of the matter this time is that although we are getting stronger and more active, we're not in a position to win - yet. Set emotion aside and think about it logically - vote for the best VIABLE candidate and help protect as many of your rights as you can, basically buying a little more time for us to become stronger. I won't try to think that I can change your mind, only make you think. The reality is that we just aren't strong enough yet. You may still choose to "vote your conscience" but if you do, at least you'll still have your principals to keep you company when president algore takes your guns away.

What?!?!?

No Dennis in this topic yet?

Must be really busy teaching CPR to the new Texas State Female swim-team! ;) ;)

Anyway, as a former Republican, a born-again Libertarian and a die-hard anti-Liberal, I'll vote for the excellent H. Browne.

I want the Libertarians to make and hopefully overshoot their 5% target, thus showing the political "establishment" that there is a new, growing force to be reckoned with.

At the same time, I don't think that voting Libertarian, to any extent or amount, will have any effect to affect the outcome between R and D. See, the potentially winning thing about the Libertarians is that they attract voters from both parties (pro-gunners, pro-choicers.... the list goes on).

So let the R and D battle it out. They have enough support as they are. But those who think 100% Libertarian should vote 100% Libertarian.
