Gun cleaning kits???

Anyone know of a universal gun cleaning kit that can clean rifles, pistols, and shotguns? I have been using a cheep kit only designed for 22 rifles, and I feel like it hasn’t been doing an efficient job.
I am paranoid about scratching the rifling and crowning on my pistols and rifles, while cleaning the bore. Are there any Kits that come with a tool to prevent such damage? I heard about the gun-snake, the cord that has brass bristles on it, that you pull through the bore and it cleans the barrel completely with one swipe through. Anyone know if they work? I want a kit that has everything in it needed to clean any firearm. I want it to come in a container so I can slip it in my range bag and have everything in one place.
I am also looking for another kit that is compact, so I can carry it in a pack while hunting or hiking. I would also like this one to be capable of cleaning any firearm.

My search has been going on for quite a while and I would like to put an end to it. I have looked in a few firearm stores in the area but they only seem to carry the generic kits designed for one caliber.

Thank you for your time, your advice will be greatly appreciated.

I use a Kleen-bore handgun cleaning kit for .45 caliber. I have added brushes and bore mops in 9mm and .22 and they work fine with the kit.

The accessory you are wondering about was included in the kit, and I think it's called a crown guard or something. It's a plastic cone that fits between the handle of the cleaning rod and the muzzle.

There are many commercial cleaning kits available. Check Brownell's, Denny's Shooters Solutions and Midway, Inc. websites.

Anyone have any experience with bore snakes, if so what, and what is your process of useing them? Do you put bore cleaner on the cloth part, how many passes through the barrel do you make, how often do you wash the bore snakes?

Thanks again

Try www.otisgun.com . They have many different kits that might fill the bill for you. I haven't used any of them, so can't commnet further.

My Dad has a midway cleaning kit. Looks like a big tackle box. You open it up and there is a "rack" for holding a rifle. It comes stocked with an assortment of mops, jags, bore brushes, breach brushes, patches, solvent, etc for anything between 22? and 50? caliber. Seems like a good way to go if you have a bunch of different calibers.

Without spending a small fortune on one of those "Pre assembled" multi purpose cleaning kits, I put one together myself.

I would recommend geting a medium size ammo can and then add items as you need them. I have used a military (GI) M16 cleaning rod with good success for all calibers from .22-.45. While parts of the rod did rub the bore of the bigger caliber rifles I have not had any problems with this damaging the rifling/bore.

Add few odds and ends, dental picks, hemostats, old T-shirts cut up as patches, and your pretty much set to clean any type of firearm you have.

Lately, since I have gone over to the dark side, and now favor Glocks, I use a tooth brush, and a marvelous substance called simple green. For cleaning the bore, I use the nylon brush that came with the gun. The polymer cleaning rod that was also included is great for running patches.

487, I use Boresnakes and I use them dry, run them through the barrel twice immediately after shooting and it sems to clean out all the crud. Haven't had to wash them yet.

They are good to carry with you when you go shooting and use immediately after you stop shooting. Doing this requires less cleaning of the bores when I get home.

Great product, I recommend them to everyone.

I'm with K80, The bore snake is the best. Takes about three passes and that bore is clean. Fast and easy.

If you buy one, you will want one for every calibur.
