Gun cleaning difficulties

Lightsped

New member
I have a Taurus Total Titanium pistol in stealth gray. This gun has the ported barrel. I shot 50 rounds of leaded ammo through this gun and now my gun has this silverish looking stuff on the front sight. I have used Hoppie #9 SemiAuto cleaner and the Bore cleaner and removed some of this silverish stuff, but I can't seem to get the rest of the silverish stuff off. I have tried scraping it off with my fingernail and that isn't working either.
Any ideas? Thanks

If you were using unjacketed ammo then it's probably lead. Let the slide sit in a container of nitro solvent overnight. This should loosen the lead deposits. Just make sure this won't harm the finish.

Lightsped, get a lead remover cloth. Made by Birchwood-Casey, set you back 4 bux. Works great for the leading/fouling problem you're having, also works great on the face of cylinders to remove the lead rings. I've even cleaned lead out of the bore of some heavily leaded revolvers.

You can order the cloth through www.wholesalehunter.com or www.cheaperthandirt.com

I second the lead remover cloth. If all else fails, you could get one of those things that looks like a wadded-up mile-long strip of stainless steel. I don't know the proper name for them, but they look kinda like steel wool, only it's stainless steel, and they're much more coarse. That is, they LOOK more coarse, but supposedly they won't rub the finish off your gun like steel wool will. Personally, I'd only use it on a stainless or unfinished piece of metal. It's great for getting the soot off the gas piston on my AK. HTH

I wouldn't set your slide in nitro solvent overnight as you might wake up and find that your front sight dot is missing! I would go with the lead-a-way cloth. The kind I have is yellow in color and this stuff works wonders!

Light,
I don't know which brand of bore solvent your presently using, but I'd heartily recommend MPro7. A bit pricey but works extremely well and is very easy on the nose and hands -no odor & low toxicity - in their pamphlet they have a lead removal regimen spelled out that really works. They also mention that squiggly stainless steel pad as an excellent scrubber, but as your build up is minimal I don't think you'll need it.
Best,

Greetings,

I've used both the cloth and MPro7. Although MPro7 is an excellent product, the leadaway cloth works better on lead buildup and is less messy. MPro7 is water-based.

Use an appropriately sized wooden dowel covered with the cloth to scrape. Cut the dowel at an acute angle for better scraping.

Ledbetter

The leadaway cloths aren't recommended for blued finishes. It will damage blued finishes. I assume your front sight is blued?

Iosso bore cleaner will take that lead right off and not damage your finish. Just apply a dab to a patch and rub the lead off the sight.

I bought an HK P9S that was like new in the box except for a few lead spatters on the slide. The guy selling it thought the finish was damaged and had knocked off $200 from the price after I pointed out the "damaged" finish. Took it home and in 30 seconds the "damage" was gone after I rubbed it off with the IOSSO.

I got a helluva good deal off that gun. :)

Hey! Slick puppy is right. Don't use leadaway cloths on bluing. I thought total titanium was like, totally titanium.

Currently I am using Hoppes #9 Bore Cleaner and I also have some Hoppes #9 Semi-Auto cleaner. I have tried both and neither are getting this lead off of the front sight.
By the way, the front sight of my Taurus is a new finish Taurus calls "Stealth Gray". It is a dull dark gray color. Here is a pic of my gun I am talking about (the lead is not visible, but you can see the gun's finish).

Keep the recommendations coming as I am anxious to head to the gun store and buy something to get the lead off.
Thanks

:) Propane torch will remove it, but Ti burns. Before Denny's Shooters Supply folded they sold a spray cleaner for comps that cleaned out the built up lead. I can't remember the name of the stuff but it worked pretty slick.
