Gun buying frenzy in CT

I visited a well known LGS in my area and was surprised to find a very large number of people shopping for ammo, magazines and of course, AR15s. It was a true frenzy. Most prices had doubled !!! The stores are having record sales and gun owners are paying the high price. Ironically, speculators, politicians and the press have contributed to increased gun sales and gun permit applications. I hope this get back to normal soon.

Expanding the base of gun owners isn't a bad thing. Funny how things go like that sometimes despite the media's attempts to influence in the opposite direction.

NY state...

My good friend in the metro area of New York City told me the small LE supply/FFL licensed shop near him was packed. He went in around 1000am on a Tue, about a week ago. That's a lot of customers for a weekday morning for any retail business. My friend said a lot of cops & state troopers were buying stuff too.
I doubt the sales & orders will go down any time soon. Factor in the slow pace of stocking/supply/logistics of many firearm industry products & the "you want what? When?" mindsets of some gun shop staff, you'll have a long, long wait. :(

Same here in Nebraska. ARs and .223/5.56 ammo is flying off the shelves everywhere. We must all be planning a murderous rampage (disgusted sarcasm).

Don't know why the cops & troopers are snatching stuff up, the ban won't apply to them.

paknheat,

It's for personal property. Contrary to popular belief, it would technically illegal for former LEOs to keep [potentially] banned 10+ mags or other banned items once they quit or retire. Futher, getting banned guns during an AWB is a pain in the butt for a Law Enforcement Department. On a personal level, there is no walking into your chief's office and saying, "Chief, get me a few 30 round AR mags, and a Glock 17 with hi-cap mags for my personal collection."

My father was a cop all througout the 94 AWB (still is), and he is dreading a new AWB as much as the next gun owner.

+1 on Departed's post....

+1 on Departed's remarks. Many citizens & gun owners may not know or understand that a gun ban/new gun laws could cause major problems to sworn LE officers/small PDs.
If "assault weapons" are made illegal, a semi auto or select fire duty rifle would skyrocket up to $10,000.00 USD for a LE officer or dept to buy. People don't get that SMGs like the HK MP5 or the FN-P90 cost as much as a used car!

And don't give me the "rural cops can use lever-action rifles" BS. The "evil looks" or "bad PR" excuse is NO reason to not properly arm a patrol deputy/sworn officer. I read a gun press article with that line of bull about 2 years ago.
Many cops(and armed security officers) have to pay for their own weapons & ammunition. I say let the people with the "hey, so what" mindset go in & deal with a active shooter or barricaded subject first!

Besides which, even their personal practice time will be hampered by ammo shortages, and so on. Even if they werent buying a backup M4 for their patrol car and were just buying ammo, they've got to get it while they can.

Average department prices for M4s are only around a grand. About the same for what we pay for semi auto stuff. Other full auto stuff isn't all that expensive on department letter head. Certainly not used car prices unless you get into some pretty heavy weaponry. Ok maybe some used cars but none I would buy. :D

I definitely agree with that. The TV news and even radio news was nothing but the tragedy for days. I would just turn it off. But later on I watched several "reports" where they interviewed people who said they were "tearing up their NRA membership cards" or calling out for more gun control. We seemed to be a nation that was stuck in a deep dislike or even outright fear of guns. (At least that is the way it was shown on TV.) If that was true... the public should have "turned away from guns in disgust." The gun shops should be empty. Guns should be standing there with nobody buying them.

But that sure doesn't seem to be what's happening!!

They are just trying to keep up with the Jones' and every civilian that stands on the customer side of a gun counter is named Jones. :D

Retail sale prices for class III/auto weapons....

For years(including the last weapon ban era; 1994-2004), I saw many SMGs & patrol rifles(HK94s, Beretta, SIG, FN-FALs, Galil, etc) that were not cheap. The short barrel & compact rifles are pricey too.

Citizens must pay a premium for these military weapons.

Yes it will. Or it might. Cops are private citizens, too. The stuff that will be immune from any ban is departmental property. If it is the cop's personal property, it is subject to the same law as everyone else's personal property.

And if it isn't then it damn well should be. NO LAW should give special treatment to a particular group, especially if the group is govt employees (any level).

This is not a cop bash. If you think it is, then you aren't quite as bright as the people pushing gun control. Cops (all levels) are just people, like the rest of us. They do a job (because they want to) and they get paid to do it.

Do I think they deserve a few perks because of the dangerous, thankless job they do? Yes, a few little things, sure. Like not having to pay the parking meter for a marked car, on duty. Or CCW approval, off duty.

But NOBODY should be in a separate (protected) legal class because of the job they do. And yes, that includes politicians too, in my opinion.

I've been a cop for 30+ years and I follow the same laws that the rest of the populace follows, especially when it comes to guns and ammo. Yeah, I can draw a patrol rifle from the armory, but it's a whole lot less hassle to own my own. Magazines are the same way. Some outfits give me a LE discount, some don't. I generally pay full retail for my equipment and supplies.

If I want a particular firearm that's on the department list, I can order it through the department and avoid the Pittman-Robertson excise tax, but that's about the it. Glock offers LE discounts on some guns, but generally I can shop around and find those guns cheaper.

And, our department competes for ammunition just like everyone else. During the last big ammo shortage we were unable to get enough ammo for qualifications. Each officer shoots a minimum of 60 rounds of ammo per firearm, and we've got over 600 sworn officers. You do the math, and you'll find that we shoot a whole lot of ammo during training and quals. The department generally pays almost full retail on those purchases, but they can't buy any ammo at all if the distributors don't have it in stock.

But NOBODY should be in a separate (protected) legal class because of the job they do. And yes, that includes politicians too, in my opinion.

I concur with that 100%. Cops are citizens just like everyone else. I love the hypocrisy when politicians call for gun-bans, but they're protected 24/7 by armed security personnel.
