Gun Black Finish

OverPressure

I have recently ordered a Colt Commander Lightweight.
My question is , is the aluminum frame gun black as durable
as the metal slide. I currently own a Colt Defender and use
Hoppes #9 on the untreated frame.

No cold colouring is terribly durable. Cold bluing doesn't help prevent steel rusting much either. However, no solvent should bother it.
Al can be anodized though. That is far more durable and is what's on a Commander frame.
Colt uses Ceracote(baked paint) on Defender frames.

So, you have an anodized al frame and blued slide. The slide is not very corrosion resistant, but the base metal is quite hard. Scratching the bluing is quite easy, but a deep scratch would be difficult.

The frame anodizing could be quite durable. Think ar15, but the al is pretty soft. That means after scratching through the anodizing, the scratch can become a gouge. Generally hard anodize is tough enough. My Dan Wesson CCO slide is duty treat....very hard durable black. The frame is hard anodize. Both are wearing the same.
