Gun Ban in Australia

I'm curious as to the actual extent of the gun ban in Australia. Are all guns, both long arms and handguns banned, or are there crazy little clauses allowing certain things? Thanks...

What has been banned so far are "Assault
Rifles"--AK47's etc and other auto rifles
including .22's--all handguns are still
legal--but auto shotguns are illegal.
The whole thing is an embarrassing mess and
it only happened because one nutter killed
35 civilians with auto rifles----it was a
political kneejerk reaction,not thought out
and not very smart. It is still possible, but
difficult,to own the banned guns but there
are very tight requirements.

I was under the impression that all semi-auto's have been banned and pump action shotguns. That includes semi-auto handguns.

Anyone confirm or deny?

We can Legally own just about any type of semi-auto handgun you can name.
Some have been banned from import - Tec 9s
but you can still own them ! :)

OK:

1. ALL semi-auto long guns (rimfire, centrefire and shotgun) are "prohibited weapons". While it is theoretically possible to show sufficient "reason and need" to own one, this is NOT the case in practice. Even property owners with severe feral animal problems have been denied an autoloader.

2. Pump action shotguns are in the same category.

3. Handguns have generally been left alone -- but the licensing requirements for those are already hideous. Note that CCW in Australia is a near as dammit impossible. I believe fewer than 6 "civilian" permits have been issued in the whole of Australia. Handgun hunting is also banned.

For more specific licensing requirements, see:

I sure hated to hear the morons are also in control of the place I wanted to move to for a few years. I changed my plans as soon as I heard the news. I thought that the one place in the world where there would be more gun enthusiasts would be Oz. Now I'm stuck with living here in Texas (gun lovers heaven!).

Actually, CCW in many places in Australia is quite easy to get. I friend of mine lives, for now, in Brisbane, and she got her CCW last year. She carries a Beretta 92 or a S&W .357. And there are a LOT more than 6 CCWs!

At first, she thought the PRK was MUCH more restrictive, being that it's next to impossible to get a CCW near any population center. Then she saw my rifle collection... :)

HS,

This is OT, but help me out. There's lots of talk of the Tasmanian Police Department using special Glock 17s that have a frame mounted safety. I've always disocounted this as I know Aussie police use the Glock 22/23. Any info you might have will be greatly appreciated.

Troy: I'd be very interested in hearing more about that friend's CCW. Unless she's in an occupation that meets the requirements (e.g. security guard), I have great difficulty believing it. (Please note, I'm not casting aspersions, I just want to know how this miracle was performed!!)

Tecolote:
I think HS has gone for a few months. Can't give you details, but I know someone posted a picture here (Don Gwinn?? Coinneach??) of an Australian Glock which did, indeed, have a frame-mounted safety.

The Flying DutchGlock.

Does the Tasmanian PD not have any idea how many people it could make happy by returning its emails?

Supposedly there's a giant drawing of a Glock with a thumb safety on the plains at Nazca. Rumor has it that Nessie carries one as well...

In Qld CCW is available to people carrying drugs (Doctors) cash (shopkeepers and the like)--note the Jeweller who shot and killed the armed robber on the Gold Coast last week.
The set-up is not clearly spelt out---you just need to show a good reason--also firearms instructors etc.can carry.

Warning: Thread veer follows...

LawDog,

Bless your heart, that is pretty close to the information I was looking for.

I'd seen the pictures before, but all they showed me was a Glock with a safety. Was it a one-off prototype? One of one million for the Chinese army? Just how big is Tasmania's police dept: Mayberry RFD or NYPD Blue?

Thanks to this link, I now have some kind of verbose description and explanation, rather than the vague hints and subtle innuendo that had tormented me thus far.

I want to believe.

And now I do.

Blue Heeler:

Thanks very much for the info. How do I migrate to Queensland?? ;)

Just kidding. I know of two similar situations here in WA where people in similar fields (one a goldsmith; the other a GP who did a lot of locum housecall) were refused a CCW licence and told quite bluntly that they were not available "under any circumstances".

So much for "Uniform" gun laws, huh??

Tamara, the Tasmania LEA consists of about 1100 officers--which puts it somewhat above the Mayberry level in strength--however--I cannot attest to the level of training their officers have, so the Tasmania PD may just be a very large Mayberry.

The official Tasmania PD site is here:
