Guess what old Dad had in the closet.

There is a lady from church that I shoot with from time to time. Her husband bought her a new Buckmark and she has been having a blast with it.

Last week, she called and asked what I knew about shotguns. Seems her Dad had this old 12 gauge and she wanted to find out about it. It had been in a closet since he died in 1976.

I asked her to take it over to Caswells and ask Paul about the gun. . .whether it was safe to shoot or not.

Friday at the range, she brought the gun to the range.

After Paul looked at the gun he asked her if she had any idea of what she had.

She said no. . .it is just a 12 gauge shotgun.

Turns out to be an L.C Smith side by side double barrel FC and IC.

It was not well cared for before putting away and is lightly freckled on the outside but is does shoot fine and locks up nice and tight.

Without knowing more about it, the gunsmith said the value was north of $1500 and could be worth a lot more.

I told her she should get an expert appraisal and other than wiping the gun down, not to do anything to "improve" the looks.

She is a happy camper and I am happy for her.

How is that for a present from your Dad?
 
Yep! The shotgun patterned just fine. I am guessing a lot of quail fell victim to this gun.

It is too bad it sat for so long with no one checking up on it. The gun does have "character" now.
 
Well, fine weapons that have been neglected is always a sad thing.

Personally, though, for something I intend to use and shoot - I don't mind a bit of "patina" or a few dings and dents.

My first guitar teacher had me put a chip in a brand new Strat so I would stop babying it and actually play:o

Guess that lesson carried into firearms for me
