Groups at 100 yds

I was shooting my XD45 5" at 100 yds at a 10" gong, I'll bet I hit it 4 of 6 times. I was just resting my arm on a bench.

If I put it on paper, what kind of groups should I expect.
 
I don't think you can really talk about groups with a conventional handgun at 100 yards. I have seen some very skilled handgunners keep shots within about 3 inches off a rest. But that shooting was done with very accurate revolvers; not many auto pistols will do that. Of course, I would expect guns like a TC with a scope to equal or better that shooting, that is why I said "conventional" handgun.

As a sort of answer, you hit a 10" gong 4 out of 6 shots, so your group must be over 10 inches. For that gun, a 10-12 inch group at 100 yards would be pretty good shooting.

Get a big sheet of paper, put a 10" bull on it, 10 rnds?, and post a pic.

Fun with guns.
 
I tried my 22/45 with a bsa red dot at 100yds for the fun of it. Shot from a bench with a rolled shirt under my wrists. I was surprised that I kept all 10rnd on the target with about a 6" group of 8, 2 flyers.
With my 460xvr scoped with a 2-8 leupold I can keep 5 rounds in a 3" ring pretty consistantly Using 300gr hand loads. The 200gr Hornady factory ammo is a bit more accurate at around 2.5".
I would think your xd would be able to group with fine irons or a red dot within about 6".
 
I used to regularly shoot my Wilson .45 at 100 yards. I could keep roughly 7 or 8 out of ten somewhere in the torso of a Milpark target. That was standing, no support. Just two hands.

I need to do that again.
 
I can shoot about 5-6 inches with my open sighted 44 mag revolver when rested. I have never tried it but, I imagine I'd have no problems with a 3 foot group with one of my semi's. :D God Bless

I've been looking for a fun,different type,of shooting game.Thanks to you guys,I've found it! Don't know the guns or calibers to be used yet,but will have the peace and time of our farm range.Might report if not a total disaster. :D
 
Hickok45 routinely hits his gong (size unkown) at 80yards and tries everything he shoots on the gong. His vids of his 230 yard gong hits are other-worldly. I can't even see the target...

All that is way beyond my skillset....:(

Even Hodgdon's and Bowler on test handguns, from a ransom rest, at 50 yards. Although some are as small as 1/2 groups at 50, I doubt it would maintain much MOA at 100. I think you very may well be able to get 6-8" groups. Let us know
 
I play with it. If you get into it then I would suggest 10mm and maybe 38 Super over 45ACP. Ol Hickock 45 routinely wacks his 80 yard gong with all sorts of hand guns. Then he has his 230 yard shoots which are fun to watch.
 
My friends and I shoot a 18" gong at 100 yards a couple times a year. The hardest part is figuring out where to aim since you're covering the target. Once you find something to reference, most any Glock/XD/Smith/Sig/etc. will have no problem with repeated hits. I'd imagine most of them would be 10-15" groups at 100 yards based on our experience.
 
You may be surprised. I shoot at an 8" swinger at 100 yrds with several of my iron sighted pistols and can hit more often than I miss. But when I sit down to shoot groups on paper for some reason my groups open up more than I figure they should. That goes the same for my specialty pistols with their high power scopes. I can ring a 1" swinger all day but shooting MOA groups takes more mental focus for some reason.
