Hi I'm new to this forum and I recently got in a scuffle with my close friend Earl about what was the best handgun for protection against grizzlies. I own four handguns, a Ruger Mk III, S&W Sigma (9mm), FN Five-Seven, and a Ruger Super Redhawk Alaskan (.454 Casull). Earl was saying that the best one for protection would be the Ruger Alaskan because the powerful .454 Casull. I'm a pretty decent shot with it but I feel undergunned with only 6 shots especially if there's multiple bears. So I'm thinking the 9mm would be too weak to hurt the bear but the Five-Seven with 20 or 30 armor piercing rounds would be able to make quick work of multiple charging grizzlies. What do all y'all think?

Sounds like you need protection from Earl! :D

The .454 is the de facto standard where no one will doubt the power of the cartridge, and suggest good practice and shot placement. .44 magnum, out of anything short of a Ruger DA revolver (with "Ruger only" load data), is given questionable capability in such situations.

The 5.7mm is not an armor piercing round (in the ammo you and I can buy). It'll fragment against the mass of hair/skin/fat/muscle/bone that makes up a bear and not penetrate well.

As for charging packs of grizzlies... As long as they're not zombie charging packs of grizzlies, the SRH Alaskan in .454 is an ideal pistol. If such mythical packs of griz did choose to pounce on you.

handguns, bear-big game country...

I agree with Earl.
For your uses the Ruger AK .454 would do best.
Unless you want to try packing a Glock 21/20 with a .50GI caliber kit or a big Desert Eagle .50AE.
Your practical choices are somewhat limited to large caliber, magnum type revolvers.

Multiple bears? Now that is some funny stuff right there! First laugh out loud I have had all day.

Did you carefully consider what gun you would need if you were faced with multiple bears and a pack of wolves at once? What if they were being led by a pair of mountain lions or T-800s? What does Earl think of this situation?

Well old Earl thinks the chance of encountering multiple grizzlies are too slim to bring a high capacity pistol like the FN Five-Seven. Also he claims the 5.7mm rounds are basically just high powered .22 rounds that will just tick off the bear. I reckon that ten or twenty of 'em might be able to dissuade the bear to change course.

Oh, dear - now how are you going to get 30 rounds into moving bears that are charging you?

Guess what - we like bear threads but silly ones - NOT. Tell Earl that his TV show was canceled.
