Gritty Footage Tonight

Frontline on PBS is doing another mountain-guerilla home-video special tonight. They always show the real-deal video that other American news outlets would never show in a million years. Apparently the Pashtuns are building up the Taliban again and they are getting more active.

Do we have enough troops over there to deal with a fundamentalist resurgence?

What are we doing over there nowdays? You never see anything on the dang news. Hopefully this show may cast some light on things, Frontline tends not to pull any punches...

I'm planning on watching Frontline tonight. As to news in the US of what's actually going on in Afghanistan or even Iraq, forget it. I read the British magazine Economist every week; it gives pretty good info on international affairs. While not rabidly pro-US policy, the Economist can hardly be called liberal. For that viewpoint, I check out the website of the British newspaper the Guardian most days.

Things in Afghanistan have really been heating up of late, with the Taliban making quite a comeback, and Iraq is getting worse and worse, contrary to what our administration is telling us.

Today I attended a lecture by a former high-level CIA analyst Ray McGovern, who spent 27 years with the agency. He's not exactly a fan of the present administration, to say the least. Someone in the audience mentioned that US ships are being massed in the Persian Gulf and perhaps a little October bombing action is in the works for Iran, just in time for elections. I hope this is just a baseless rumor.

Basically the Taliban moved to Warizstan. The Pakistanis in order to maintain peace and hold onto power signed a peace agreement. We can not cross the border into Pakistan unless it is done on a covert basis. If we cross the border in Pakistan that could light the powder keg that overthrows the current Pakistani government. Possibly even returning it to a Muslim fundamentalist state who has a nuclear program. So now the fundamentalists have a haven to train and for R&R where we cant touch them and the Pakistanis refuse to clean out.

I can't think of a single instance in which tribal savages (as a group) have been successfully integrated into Western Civilization. It ain't going to happen in the Middle East, either. Sad, sad, situation. Some of the world's problems don't have good answers.

The problem is, every time I can think of, the "integration" of "savages" into Western civilization has involved mass genocide of the "savages."

Yup. This is bad...:(
