Grips - round butt v square butt

Let me make sure I understand ...

On a round butt N frame smith, a square butt set of grips will work, correct?

I understand why a round butt set of grips won't work on a square butt revolver. Simple physics ...

But I'm seeing a lot of grips advertised as square/round compatible and it appears to be just cut for a square butt.

Also ...

If I chose a wooden, square butt to use on my round butt 627, I loose seeing the back-side of the frame cut out in a Hogue style rubberized grip, correct?

In other words, the distance between my palm and the trigger just got longer, correct?

Modern N-frames (from the 90's or so) all have round butts. The Square butt is provided by the grip.

Earlier than that most wooden square but grips allowed the backstrap of the frame to show through. So these do not fit the round butts.
Synthetic grips may cover the whole frame. if so, they will work on the round butts.

There are dimensional differences in the two grip shapes in areas other than the rear corner. IOW SB stocks will fit poorly in several areas, not just the rear of the butt.

This actually goes for all of the frame sizes, not just the N frames. The exceptions are some special commemorative editions, the current "Classics" series, and certain Performance Center guns.

The OP needs to shop for "conversion" grips (or stocks). These convert the RB frame into a quasi-SB shape.

Thanks ... the OP (me) posted this ...

So there is such an animal that carguychris describes ...

FYI

My stock 638 2 finger round butt grips fit on my 37 sqaure butt frame, but the frame did stick out the bottom, but it bolted right on.
