Grips for large hands

I am hoping that some of the experts here could give me some suggestions.

I have a S&W 686 SSR and I have also had the same issue with a 386NG. My hands are just a bit too large for the smaller K/L frame grips. I would probably be ok with an N frame but it's too late now I guess.

Anyway, on an auto with a double stack mag the grip is "fat" enough that my hand if taken up wrapping around the grip and my finger falls comfortably on the right place of the trigger so just the tip is pulling back. On my revolver the problem is that the grip is smaller so when I wrap my hands around it naturally the trigger is all the way up between the first and second knuckle.

So I want to get a new grip (I just have the stock SSR grip on it) that will for lack of a better term, take up more of my hand when it's wrapped around. My problem is that I haven't been able to find any of the less common grips locally to actually handle and I don't want to spend $1000 on 10 grips before I finally find one that works. So I would like to hear from some of those with larger hands and what grips they are using on their 686. Even what grips not to use if there are any experience.

Thank you. I'll definitely check those out.

btw, I was looking at the Hogue Camo Lamo grips but I can't tell how thick they are and if they will be enough.

You might check Herrett's Jordan Trooper grips. Bill Jordan had extremely large hands, favored a K-frame, and so designed a grip that covered both the front- and back-strap. Herrett's will still custom-make grips if you'll send them an outline tracing of your hand.

pretty sweet. Price is good too considering they are custom. It's no more than the Camo Lamo grips with checkering.

Have you looked at the S&W 'Combat' grips with finger grooves?

These are off my 686-3:

I have the same problem you do on K frames...and I've been able to pick up some of the Finger Groove grips at my local gun shows ( but they're getting expensive - around $ 100 ) ....but at least if you take your gun to the gun shows ...you can probably try the grips on - to your gun before you buy.

http://thefiringline.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=82015&d=1339792625 guns on the right in photo are all K frames ...mod 19's and 66's - the top mod 66 at right - has a Hogue wood grip on it.

I don't really care for the Hogue rubber grips ...they're a little too much "utilitarian for me" ....but Hogue does make some wood grips - with finger grooves as well ....and these are on an N frame S&W model 27 ...but they make them for K frames as well..

http://thefiringline.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=82120&d=1340222605 - here are some of my S&W mod 19 ( with a wood hogue grip on it / and a pair of 629's with the hogue finger groove grips - which I kind of like especially on the 3" barrel in a .44 mag - because it jumps around a little.)

http://thefiringline.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=82121&d=1340222605 model 27 has a hogue wood grip on it - the gun at the bottom of the photo obviously.

Lot of good suggestions.

One thing I might do is take my gun to the next gun show and see if I can't find something there. If not, I might try those Jordan Trooper grips or maybe even the S&W finger grooves.

you really need to check out the Herrett's jordan trooper grips. This was a Bill Jordan design and he had gigantic hands from what I have read. Herretts custom makes them according to your hand for around $100. You will find that felt recoil is reduced with these grips because of he fact that the grip covers the back strap and the tang, keeping your hand from taking a pounding.

Honestly, right now that is the way I'm leaning. I'd really like to find a set or even a gun of any sort that has them on it just to get an idea of how they feel before I spend the $100 but it does look promising.

It has been a while, but the used to make grip blanks which were attachable to the pistol but not contoured for the hand.

If they are still available buy some blanks and whittle out your own contoured grips.

I have big palms but stubby fingers. None of the commercial grips with finger grooves worked for me. Just might try that route.
