Grips for a Walker Colt

My brother has an 1847 Walker colt replica from Traditions. It unfortunately has some really unattractive wood grips on it. They are a dull brown with no finish to them.

Either I take them off and stain them myself, or perhaps purchase new ones from another company, but I don't know where to get them. Any suggestions for that?

I tend to think that a replica grip won't be made to fit, and that the chances of getting grips that need work to get them to fit make it unwise to buy some.

So I would probably look more for help on how to stain the grips?

It isn't difficult if you want to stain the grips to the color you want them. Take the grips off the pistol and You can sand the old stain off and down to the bare wood with 150 grit sandpaper (sand in the same direction as the grain of the wood). After you get down to the bare wood, resand it with about a 220 grit sandpaper and then a third time with a 600 or 800 grit sandpaper. This smooths out the wood so there are no rough places.

Now you can apply the stain of your choice according to the directions on the can. Each coat makes it darker. After it has dryed for the amount of time on the instructions you can apply polyurethane or Tru-0il from birchwood casey to add a little shine on top of the stain.

On ones that I have done, I don’t sand, I use a finish and
stain remover. For me anyway it is too easy to sand off to
much and round corners. Whatever stain I use, I thin it
down a long ways. By thinning it, any figure that the wood
might have will show up to it’s best advantage, because
thinned the stain will penetrate deeper. It does take a lot
more applications of the stain and more time to do it.
