Grips for a 1911

I'm going to be buying a Ruger Night Watchman and the first thing I want to do when I bring it home is change those grips. I was thinking of some nice grips by Grashorn Stag Grips. How comfortable are these to grip? Anyone have them?

Grips for looks are quite different than grips for shooting.
The more you will use this pistol for actual shooting, the more the differences in grips styles will be apparent.
For actual shooting, the best I've found have been the steel backed smooth rubber ones, with a small cutout for reaching the the mag release easier.
They are also inexpensive.
So how about a neat pair for looks and the above for the range?
Then it won't matter if the fancy version is comfy or not.

Be aware that the grips you are considering MIGHT NOT FIT.

I don't know about the Ruger, specifically, but I do know that some "1911s" do not use the same spacing of the grip screw bushings as others do.

My son got a S&W "1911" great gun, shoots great, BUT it will not take "standard" GI/Colt grips, the spacing of the bushings is just a little bit "off", so regular grips won't fit.

Since you don't have the pistol yet, you might check with the grip maker you intend to use, and see if they know if their grip will fit on the Ruger, or not...

Good Luck

I got a set of stag grips from Pat on a S&W 639 and they look great, I have no problem shooting with them, his work is excellent on the set I have. I will admit that I bought them more for show than work. I like the grips the night watchman comes with, I would give them a try before you decide. +1 on knowing the measurement on the grip bushings before you order, you never know.

I've owned several sets of Grashorn stag 1911 grips. They are of excellent quality, fit right, and hold up extremely well. The only thing about stag horn and other grips of similar natural materials is that they are often made thicker than standard grips and more square. Call Patrick Grashorn and speak to him about what you are looking for in terms of fit and feel as well as appearance. Stag horn grips can be had with a rough "bark" like surface or smoothed, the shape of the grip will be affected by the surface you want. Comfort wise, I find them quite comfortable if shaped right, doesn't matter if they're smooth or rough.

These are Grashorn stags on my Clark Custom Meltdown Colt 1991A1 Compact-

There are grips that look good and grips that shoot good . Sometimes you find grips that do both . I use my ivory 1911 grips mostly for display . For shooting , I like VZ grips. They are so grippy that you might find it difficult to drop the gun .

Also, the Ruger will accept most 1911 grips. The spacing is standard, so most grips will work, unlike the issue the fellow had with his SW. I own a Ruger and change the grips all the time with no issues.

Good luck
