"Grippy" wood stock finish? (Factory 10-22)

I'm looking for something to make the finish on my old-ish 10-22 wood factory stock more "grippy" as in less slick. I'm finding that the forestock is failing to let me get a good grip in one position as my hand is sliding around under sling tension. Over time the factory finish has gotten quite slippery & I'm wondering if there is something I can use to remove the slip without messing up the appearance.

I'm familiar with the stick-on goodies, but don't like the look. Unlike my other stocks which have an oil finish this one is some kind of spray-on factory plastic/varnish/poly.

If your interested in removing that "shiny look" remove it. You will then have what we call a satin finish, which has a little more texture, it's less "slick". Also for some applications washing your hands and washing your stock carefully of course will help.;) There are some traction products you can also find at a paintstore, home depot, lowes,,,etc. And if you apply these correctly it'll help tremendously,, benchrest riflestocks sometimes have this product in logistical areas of the pistol, and foregrip..:) Anyway's good luck!!;)
