Grip safety install....problem???

I just installed a beavertail grip safety on a colt commander. It appeared to go ok after filing and fitting. Passes the safety checks? The question I have is when the hammer is cocked and thumb safety off, the trigger won't operate without holding down the grip safety. My concern is with the grip safety engagement. If I just barely push in on the safety, the trigger will pull and the hammer will drop. With the original part, I had to depress the grip safety further than the drop in part does now. With the Wilson drop in now, I just barely have to touch it and the hammer is allowed to fall when the trigger is pulled. I am talking very little.

Did I take to much off the part when fitting? Am I going to have to get another safety and try again? Or am I making to much out of this?

Thanks for any assistance.

If the grip safety is not binding I see two possibilities:
  • The right-hand leg of the sear spring may not be rotating the grip safety fully to its rest position. With the hammer down, check to see if the safety moves with a reasonable amount of tension throughout its range.
  • There is a lip on the bottom of the grip safety that bears against the mainspring housing to limit the motion of the safety. This interface may need adjustment to allow the safety to rotate farther out of the frame and thereby more fully engage the trigger bow.
I do not think you need a new part. The fact that it works the way you described indicates to me that its at rest position needs to be adjusted.

You may have removed too much from the part of the BT that blocks the trigger. I've seen (though I dont reccommend) smiths stretch the tip of that leg to give you more margin.

grip safety

Sir:
It appears you did a good job.
When grip safety is "out" the trigger shouldn't let the hammer fall!
When the grip safgety is "in" as if you gripped it and the trigger pulled it should fire!
Don't worry if there is only slight movement when you grip the grip safety - as long as the trigger cannot be pulled when grip safety is "out" it's fit properly. Many people fit the safety so that it doesn't disengage till almost completely down - bad in a gunfight!
Congrats!

P.S. Although I completely disagree with pinning down the grip safety (so as to de-activate it) many shooters are doing this stupidity.
