Grip Recommendations

Got a Glock 17 a few months ago and have put about 500 rounds through it.
My problem is as I continue to shoot the gun wants to rotate out of the web of my hand and into my thumb.

My hands are about average size, I can comfortably grasp the handle no problems. I don't try to squeeze the life out of the grip, but it isn't gonna get away from either.

Any grip/gear suggestions folks?

This is always the comment I heard the first time anyone fired a Glock back when they were first introduced. Kinda zippy ain't it? Kinda top heavy ain't it? See that hook on the front of the trigger guard? That's what it's for. Perfection. Ok, now try this steel 1911. WOW!

Work with a buddy at the range...find an experienced shooter ...and get some suggestions.

Read some books on tactical shooting - Massad Ayoob, etc - and some competition shooters Brian Enos, etc ....and look at their suggestions on grip and control of the gun.

Consider your grip options...and try different things - higher or lower thumbs, touch the slide or off a little , ( 70% grip with off hand / 30% with trigger finger hand ) or 60/40 or 80/20 ..., position of your elbows - are you locking out or bent a little ....foot position might stabilize you a little....lots of stuff....

But you need someone to watch and help you ...

Are you ok on slow fire / is it worse on double taps after a reload ...like tap 2, reload, tap 2 say in under 5 sec .../ are you better coming out of a holster ...or is it worse / are the sights black, or white or whatever ...maybe you need bigger sights or something easier to see / are you looking at something other than the front sight / if you put up two 10" targets a foot apart ...and double tap one, then the other ...reload ...then double tap one and then the other is it worse...

Maybe its the gun ...maybe you don't like the grip angle ...or the trigger and how it resets .. or how it breaks ...so what now ?? Do you need a slimmer grip or is that worse ...and on and on .../ different models, different guns ..that's why we all dislike some guns ..and love others ...its not a one size fits all thing. I'm not a Glock fan - it isn't because they're bad guns ...but I just don't like the grip angle, how the trigger breaks and especially how it resets ...to me a 1911, is a much more precise weapon...but even in 1911's I don't like a 3" gun...I like a 5" gun ...a 4" gun is ok. I like some of the Sigs - 239 (single stack is ok ), DA-SA trigger is ok, DAK trigger is horrible / 226 model is ok ...220 model not so much ...its all about what fits your hands / how it comes up in line to suit you ...not what suits me.

I have found the use of the Pachnayr "condom" (for lack of a better term), that slips over the grip and has the finger grooves to help me with my G17 as I also have average sized hands/fingers. Maybe something like that will help you keep your hand in one position???

thanks!

Gents,

Thanks for all the feedback!
I use the two thumbs forward up under the slide grip, with my support hand fingers wrapped around the front. I'll play with thumb placement some more and/or try placing my support hand finger under/along the front of the trigger guard.

BigJim - that's a lot of feedback to digest...I'll work it thru it tho

Something will work out

Lots and LOTS of great info here. I'm not a huge Glock fan either, but it took em a while to sell it and get the world's perfect pistol, a CZ :D. If you are stuck with the Glock, or just want a litte help, try the Pachmayr condom (love it haha!) or the Talon grip-tape grips.

Good luck

My first Glock was a gen4 G17. It was a great fit with the large back strap and I liked the rough texture. I traded that pistol for a gen3 G17L and I experienced the same issue you describe.

I recently added a Hogue "Handall", a slip sleeve that covers the grip. The extra size and texture fixed the problem for me. I have quite large hands though, so that may not work for you... Another option is "grip tape". Hickok45 uses "Talon Grips" tape on all his glocks and he shoots them pretty good!
