Grip bushing removal question.

I recently sent my Springfield 1911 to Accurate plating and weaponry to be hardchromed. The weapon turned out beautiful but one thing bothered me.They had to replace the grip bushings which they sent back to me.Two of the bushings were destroyed. All of them had the slots stripped but two were really bad.On the worst one,it looked like they had to come in from the mag well and hammer the bushings threads inward so they could pull the bushing out.Are some of these bushings that diffucult to get out?The gun is stainless by the way.

If the bushings were staked in originally, yes you pretty much have to destroy them to remove them. They are also purposely made of very soft material, so they won't ruin the frame threads when removed.

dsk, you mean hopefully "they will not ruin the frame threads when they are removed." Brownells does not sell oversized taps and bushings for no reason.

Hey, I was just being positive. ;) When I removed the bushings from my Series 80 they did damage the frame threads slightly. Fortunately I was able to chase the threads with a spare bushing and clean them up.

I might hazard a guess that at least some of the damage was done putting the bushings back in. Remember, plating adds material, so it makes a tight fit tighter. Often a gun will not even work after plating unless material was removed before plating so everything comes out even.
