Greetings and question from a new M&P Shield owner.

Greetings...First post! :) I've attached a picture of my girls.

The SP101 was my first handgun, my favorite and my baby. She's a dream to shoot.

The LCP, I got a on a good deal when the LCP 380's started to hit the market. She has her hiccups but I can't complain; she shoots true.

I picked up the M&P Shield 9 today. I rented one last week and absolutely loved it. Out of the box the magazine springs are so stiff that they do not want to load without a hard slap; when I remove a round or two everything seems fine. This happens more so on the 7 round than the 8 round mag. I'm guessing that this is normal and they just need breaking in? I'm going to leave the mags fully loaded for a few days to break the springs in.

It's normal for magazine springs to be stiff on a new gun. I'd leave them loaded and be sure they get loaded fully before shooting at the range. A few months and they should loosen right up.

Years ago the best 35.00 I spent was for an UpLula mag loader. The're the best and are very versatile. And your hands will love you!Good Shooting.

I've had my Shield three years now. It didn't do me any good whats-so-ever to leave the gun cocked and loaded with the mags full.

What solved the issue was shooting it.

Maybe the new ones are different, but I doubt it.

I'm not leaving the gun cocked and loaded; I'm leaving the mags loaded so that the springs can settle out to their equilibrium. Seriously, the 7 rounder is so stiff that I have to slap it twice (hard) to get it to load into the gun. The 8 rounder only takes one stiff hit. The good thing about that is that it's built to last.

2afreedom. Thanks for the advice; that helps! :)

New mag springs are tight, and for good reason. I know that my 1911 mags are kind of hard to fully insert when fully loaded. Same with my Walther PPQ mags when fully loaded.

I like my mag springs tight and only keep 5rds in em for home defense. I would rather them not wear any, than wear

I don't think his problem is loading the ammo in the mag I think his problem is loading the mag into the gun. If that's the case lock the slide back 1st and the mag will go right in.

don't load it +1, fill the mag, insert mag into pistol with slide locked back, let the slide slam home, 7 shots ready to go, if you want 8 shots use the same procedure with the 8 round mag, after several hundred rounds those mags will loosen up a little but not much, those are some heavy mag springs in the shield and loading them to max then slamming them into the gun is putting a lot of pressure on your mag catch for no good reason.

me three-'I'm going to agree with the Maglula Uplula Magazine Loader' :)

Yes, the Shield has strong recoil & mag springs, that's what makes it so reliable. It will loosen up a bit with use, it's a great carry gun.

Use lube sparingly, none around the firing pin or springs. I carry my 9mm Shield with 124 grain American Gunner rounds.

Seating the mag as you describe will sometimes result in a FTE on the second round with my Shield. As a result I load 6 +1 or 7 +1. Not had a FTE with this method using FMJ or JHP. As this is my primary cc pistol, I figure it's better less one round than a jam at the worst possible time.

Eazyeach. Yup, the magazine springs on the 7 round clip were so stiff that they wanted to bounce back upon loading a full mag. The 8 rounder was stiff but not as bad.

I picked her up on Sunday and left both mags filled until this morning. I took her to the range today and no problems at all; she loads/shoots like butter and is accurate as hell. Smithy did a good job on this gun; I'm very pleased! :D

Slimjim9, thanks man! I haven’t had the chance to shoot a GP-100 but I love my SP-101. It’s an absolutely beautiful machine and it’s very good at what its designed to do. I’ll probably wear out before she does. :P The grips are Hogue; everything else is stock.

Hubris, Rectifier and everyone else. Thank you for the input; I'm new to semi-autos and I do appreciate the advice!
