Greetings and 375 H&H or.....

Greetings my friends:
First post here.
I'm a semi-geezer and have over the course of my life done no centerfire hunting. I'm unlikely to start now. I do however love to shoot at stuff and have for more than 55 years.

I've shot about a thousand rounds of skeet, lots of trap but they've shut down our local clay ranges and I'm outa luck. The closest one is now 35 miles away. Too much. I've also killed more than my share of ducks and geese as well as the odd hundred quail or so and a few score of pheasant. I'm hell on birds.

We do have lots of flat spots here in Nevada that extend for miles in all directions. The only rifle in my safe at this point shoots .223 and is black. I lived and worked in Alaska for the last 10 years of my working career and had bought myself a Weatherby Mk. V in 375 H&H. It was a blast to shoot about 19 rounds through. Past that and it got tougher and tougher to pull the trigger you know? I shot mostly 270gr silver tips and had it dead nuts at 225 yards. Probably on a good day I'd shoot 2" groups. Not too shabby. Anyway I sold it when I left and never did make it to the big bear hunt on Afognak that I bought it for.

Here's the deal, I think I'm going to replace it with something. Maybe another Weatherby but I'm open to a Ruger #1 or any of the major brands but I'm also open to one of the flatter medium bore cartridges like 338 RUM, 340 Wby, etc. I dunno. I will reload whatever I get so that I can experiment with long range shooting and large hole plinking as well as the chiropractic rounds.

This is about hobby shooting rather than being practical about Mule Deer or Prong Horn hunting for the easily winded. Just starting a conversation and joining the group.

If you liked your old Weatherby .....

you will LOVE the new S2. I have had and enjoyed a Weatherby Vanguard in .270 for several years. The only complaint I ever had was with the trigger (which I replaced with a Timney).

The new S2 is a great trigger out of the box. I would suggest you look at a .270 or if you want to shoot heavier bullets a .30-06. Neither will make you afraid to pull the trigger on the 20th round or more if you like as the weight of the Weatherby helps minimize the recoil for either round. Enjoy the wide open spaces:)
