Greenville, NC Shooting Spree

This was interesting and fortunately not fatal. Lakim Anthony Faust, 23, went on a shooting spree with a shotgun (gauge and ammo not stated in today's news conference and the Chief said the information would not be released at this time). The shooter shot one person in a vehicle in a law firm parking lot (a Geico insurance adjuster) and then went what is described as across the street (but was actually more like over a block's distance, >100 yards, apparently on foot) to a Walmart parking lot and shot 3 more people. Police responded in "mere minutes" and when the shooter assaulted them, police shot him multiple times.

Turns out, all their shots were in the extremities, the Chief noting that the intent was COM shots to stop, but that there are difficulties in shooting targets that are moving or attempting to engage you (a reporter asked if officers were trained to shoot the extremities!).

Faust was carrying over 100 rounds of shotgun ammo with him at the time. He was dressed in black, but despite early reports, he was NOT wearing a ballistic vest.

No motive is reported/known at this time. The victims apparently did NOT know Faust.

It should be pointed out that the shootings took place out in the public, NOT in any sort of gun-free zones, and that NC is both an open carry and concealed carry state. Faust was not engaged by private citizens despite the shooting happening in the middle of the day (just prior to lunch) and being witnessed by lots of people. Faust did not have a significant criminal record, only some minor property crimes.

Nobody has come forward yet to suggest that Faust was a time bomb waiting to happen or any of the other "I knew this would happen" cliches.

Here are some links including a link from 2008 when Faust received some recognition.

More to it

At the age of 14, charged in Maryland with attempted first degree murder, assault with a deadly weapon. In 2006, banned from the local community college indefinitely; returned in 2011. Has volunteered at a local nonprofit.

I left that walmart at 10:00 am. My wife, who was at work, called the house at 12:00. I had an idea how THAT conversation was going to go...

Interesting, so the minor property crimes originally reported are probably the trespassing at the community college. Even more interesting on the attempted murder and other violent charges, but no mention is made of any sort of conviction.

Apparently some of these (alleged) crimes occurred while Mr. Faust was a juvenile, so the records -- including the disposition of the cases -- are sealed.

And it did go through juvie court...

Online court records from Maryland show Faust was charged with attempted first-degree murder and other charges related to an incident when he was 14. His case originated in November 2004 and went through Maryland district and circuit courts before it was remanded to juvenile court. Juvenile records routinely are sealed, and case details were not available on Monday.

I bet they get opened.

Faust was denied a gun permit back in Aug 2012...

Since the arrest records are available online, my guess is that is why he was likely got given a permit.

This was interesting...
On Friday, the alleged shooter walked from his apartment at 217 Hartford St. past a group of neighbors who were outside smoking, Avignone said. Detectives believe Faust left with a pistol-grip shotgun and more than 100 rounds of ammunition with the intent to inflict mass casualties, police said.

The sparse apartment, which police searched Friday, is within walking distance of the law firm and shopping area where the shootings took place. Police said Faust appears to have targeted people at random.

So he was seen by neighbors that he didn't shoot as he walked the 200-250 yards or so from his apartment, likely through or between the parking lots of other businesses, and around to the front of the strip mall with Kellum Law Firm where he shot his first victim (using Google Earth and assuming a shortest direct route). He then walked another 130 yards (or much more) to the Walmart parking lot after crossing a 5 lane major road and passing more businesses where he shot 4 more people and attempted to shoot the police before they got him. It is fortunate that he wasn't in a vehicle or things might have happened much faster.
