greatest rifle, handgun and shotgun and why.

What do you think is the greatest firearm in each catagory? I could think about this for hours. Colt single action army or 1911 or maybe the glock 19?? M1 garrand, AK 47or M 16?? Tell me what you think makes a great weapon.

Handgun-Springfield XD-40

Rifle-Tikka Lite .243

Shotgun-Kahn Artemis over under 12 guage.

those are the best ones because that is what I have :D;)

Greatest handgun is a Colt 1911 of course, greatest rifle is probably the Remington 700 and greatest shotgun is Remington 870

Buy only the best

I am a big fan of the Remington 700 and the 870.

The 870 has sold over 10,000,000 shotguns and hold the record as the best selling shotgun in history.
Harold Murtz. Gun Digest Treasury (DBI Books, 1994), p.193

The 700 is a versatile platform for many calabers and uses, that is easy to carry and easy to shoot.

I own both of them and will likely get a Colt 1911 next, my my semi-auto pistol is a Glock 17.

These guns are all simple, effective and reasonably priced, and they work well for me.

Handgun - M1911A1, because John Browning was a firearms genius, and 100 years of history!

Rifle - M1 Garand, because it is the gun that won the Second World War.

Shotgun - Probably the Remington 870 because it is a great, reliable gun.

In my humble opinion what makes a great weapon is longivity, reliability, impact on history, and impact on society.

I think this question is relative depending on a person's main uses for guns. For combat, probably something like a CZ 75 pistol, M1A rifle and M2 Benelli shotgun. For a hunter, a super redhawk 44 mag, 30-06 Model 70 and Browning Over Under might be the best guns ever made.

I'll answer in two parts:

Nostalgia:
Remington 700 - Proven platform, lots of tuning options/parts available, police and military favorite
Colt 1911A1 - Feels just right, a piece of American history, lots of tuning options/parts available, beautiful weapon, combat proven, combat accurate
Browning A5 - auto feed, piece of American history, great handling shotgun

Performance:
Rifles Inc. Lightweight Strata (5 lbs.) - Customized to your design and super light for walking up on coyotes or taking long shots at ground feeding crows, sub MOA accurate
Glock 21* - proven reliability, simple design, decent trigger, lots of capacity, very accurate
Browning Gold - pleasure to shoot, excellent patterning, auto feed from bottom

* Glock 19 for concealed carry

Rifle..........Mauser 98 (Paul Mauser)
Shotgun....Superposed (John Moses Browning)
Handgun....1911 (John Moses Browning)

Handgun: 1911. Designed by Gawd's right prophet on earth, John Moses Browning.
Shotgun: Winchester Model 12. Discontinued because they refused to die and Winchester wanted a cheaper gun that would require replacement.
Rifle: Mauser 98. It is the granddaddy of all modern bolt action rifles.

Pistol- 1911A1
Shotgun- Browning Auto5 because I could always hit better with it than the 870
Rifle- The Mausers because the great ones copied it
Revolver- older Colts or S&Ws

M1 Rifle because Gen. Patton said so.
Remington's Wingmaster because that is the one I own.
S&W 3906 because that is the one I am currently lusting after.

Tie for 1st place rifle..

Black powder Hawken Rifle
or
Marlin 336 30-30

both put LOTS of meat on the table for rmany years.

Agree with previous posters (pistol) the 1911 or variant

Rifle - Sig AMT. Swiss Craftsmanship at its finest.
Handgun - Sig X-Five - just pure sweetness
Shotgun - USAS- 12, a 20 round capacity shotgun that is robust enough to handle full-auto fire.
